The Big Fat Summer Post 2019

Summer is underway!

frog-897420_640

Well, I am taking some time off now, for a month or so, so here’s a grab-bag of useful links and information for a great Antwerp summer. I will be back in August. Until then, additional events will be posted on other social media, listed at the end of this post. For Antwerp pictures, don’t forget to follow me on Instagram!

Thank you for reading and following  Nessascityblog; do please keep sharing it with anyone who might find it handy to have this information in English, especially if they are arriving new in the city this summer -WELCOME!  -and have a fabulous summer 2019 in Antwerp.

Eat & Drink

… at Dokmarkt every Friday from 3pm until 8, and if you want to stay out later, you’re very close to summer bars like Jardim, Sommar and Bocadero -all of which are along the Schelde.

Check out Café Capital in the Stadspark if you haven’t already done so. It’s great if you IMG_20190718_174847_resized_20190718_054908004are taking kids to the play area; for an evening out try Bar Jeudi on Thursdays.

Fiesta Europa is a popular, diverse and accessible five day food festival on Groenplaats which is on until Sunday 21st July.

Flying Pig are on Steenplein on the 2nd August; drinks, music, food trucks and general revelry from 5pm.

Bollekesfeest is an annual Nessascityblog not-to-be-missed favourite, celebrating our local beer: de Koninck, or Bollekes as it is known once served in its distinctive bow-like glass. Bollekesfeest is on the 16th, 17th and 18th August, and like other Stad Antwerpen events will be cashless this year. As well as the local brew there will be lots of other foods and drinks to enjoy. If you have kids to entertain (or are hungry) then the Steenplein is the best location for you -there you will find the Kids’ Village and all the food stands.

Visit

Experience the excitement of going around Antwerp’s best museums throughout the night on Museum Night on the 3rd August, and don’t forget that Stad Antwerpen museums are free on the last Wednesday of the month.

MUHKA is Antwerp’s museum of contemporary art

Enjoy Lambermonmartre the largest open-air local art market: on Leopold de Waalplaats (in front of KMSKA) on the 28th July and the 25th August. For the other regular markets in Antwerp, here’s a useful list.

Take a stroll along the renewed Scheldekaaien – the banks of the river from Sint Andries to the south of the city have been renovated with open spaces, places to sit, stroll or for kids to play (pic below).

TzuidFKids

If you are scratching your head looking for something cheap and cheerful to occupy the kids on their summer holidays, then have a look at Speel-O-Rama at the Zuiderpershuis, starting next week: it’s on from 15th July -9th August and costs only 2 euros per day, per child. It’s for kids aged 7-13, and offers workshops, activities, creative play, theatre and water games.

These Antwerp Sports Activities are for children aged 6-13. You need to register your child for a place on an activity. These usually mean a week sport sessions (Mon- Fri) in your chosen sport.

Bookish and creative kids might enjoy Bibfabriek at the Permeke library, on Wednesdays at 2pm during July.

The 21st of July is Belgium’s national day. Here are a few places which will be marking the formation of our relatively youthful nation.

You can find all you need to know about Antwerp Pride, which is celebrated in Antwerp from the 7th-11th August. Of course there will be loads of Pride-related events taking place around the city, but for many the most important is the Pride Parade which takes place on Saturday 10th August, starting with a pre-parade event at midday. See here for the details, including the route of the parade.

Also taking place during Pride week (and continuing until the 18th August) is the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival. For a great general guide in English to LGBT+ life in Antwerp see this guest post from last year by Timothy Junes.

Linkerwoofer

Sfinks Festival (25th-28th July) and Linkerwoofer (2nd -3rd August) are two popular Antwerp music festivals. Sfinks is a free four day festival, Linkerwoofer is ticketed. Both events are child-friendly.

Browse, buy & sell

Antwerp regulars-  for those in search of a second hard bargain- include Goegekregen rommelmarkt (28th July) and Permeke Boekenplein (21st July)

You can go Sunday Shopping in the shopping areas of the city on the first Sunday of the month.

Handy summer links

The complete Antwerp summer programme (Zomer van Antwerpen) was released on 28th May at http://www.zva.be/. Helpfully, there are English and French versions of the programme in downloadable pdf form.

This weekend in Antwerp: 17th, 18th & 19th August

bfsp2018Greetings! I hope you are having a great summer in Antwerp and that readers survived the heatwave, and enjoyed safe travels. Weekly posts are back, but some of the information on the Big Fat Summer post may still be useful to you.

This weekend the most important event is the annual Bollekesfeest -for newbies, a ‘bolleke’ is the local name for a glass of Antwerp’s best known beer: de Koninck, which obviously will be flowing in copious quantities this weekend. Bollekesfeest takes place over all three days, and over a few different locations, most notably round the Historic Centre: Suikerrui, Groenplaats, Grote Markt and Steenplein, with smaller events on Sint Andriesplaats. It’s about a lot more than beer: this is a hugely social and popular event, also featuring music, DJs, foodstalls and additional events, some of which connect to the Baroque Season. Check the program carefully to see what you would like to do, or alternative just show up and wander from location to location. If you have kids to entertain, the Steenplein will be the best venue for you, where as well as the beers, food and music, there is a Kidzone and a play fountain (tip: bring a change of clothes and a towel).

It is free to attend Bollekesfeest (food and drink purchases are made with a Betaalkaart this year). Here are the opening times:
Friday 17/8: 16.00 – 24.00 uur.
Saturdag 18/8: 11.00 – 24.00 uur
Sunday 19/8: 11.00 – 20.00 uur

Friday

Here the Friday programme for Bollekesfeest.

The Zomer van Antwerpen (ZVA) is by no means over and there are still a number of free music events taking place on squares around the city. This Friday night the band Handkerchief (blues, ska, gypsy, gospel, surf, calypso and rumba influences) are playing on Dageraadplaats from 7.30pm. Or show up earlier, as there are kids’ activities from 3pm.

The OLT free music event this week comes courtesy of The Mambo Queens and starts at 8.30pm.

Permeke Library

Secondhand goodies can also be found at the monthly Strip -en- boekenplein (second hand books, comics, graphic novels and more) on De Coninckplein just in front of Antwerp’s Permeke Library, from 10am -4pm.

Sunday is also a good day to head to FOMU if you have kids to entertain. They offer special activities for children as part of their Zomerse Zondagen.

The weather is likely to remain somewhat cloudy and overcast this weekend, but nonetheless dry and warm with top temperatures around 23- 24 degrees.

The Big Fat Summer Post 2018

bfsp2018

Here is the Nessascityblog Big Fat Summer post for 2018 -a bumper post to keep you informed and equipped to enjoy summer in Antwerp while I take my own summer holiday.

Regular weekly posts for the weekend will be back on 16th August!

The first information source you need to plan your Antwerp summer is the Stad Antwerpen Zomer Van Antwerpen website!

Summer Bars

Pop-up summer bars are at the heart of the Antwerp Summer experience, and are always an excellent go-to option for simply getting out in the city with friends or family. I can’t list them all but here is a breif guide to some I have been to. For a full list of all the summer bars in Antwerp (and beyond) this site is very useful and has an English version now too.

The Zomer van Antwerpen summer bar on Sloepenweg is the mother of all summer bars and is completely all-purpose, providing affordable food, drink, an outdoor library, ZVA info-booth, circus tent, and loads of space for kids to play. Professional loafers (like myself during the summer holidays) think of it as ZVA HQ.

Cargo_breedbeeld_smaller
Bar Noord (Park Spoor Noord)

In Park Spoor Noord, Bar Noord is similarly all-purpose if you are entertaining kids for the warm summer days (the fountains in which children can play are a big draw when temperatures rise). Bar Noord is open until late with more events and music for when it’s grown-up time.

Another huge bar is Bocadero at Waagnatie. It’s got a great location right by the water and is a pretty hip place to see and be seen. Kids will like the sand but Bocadero is definitely more of a venue for those sans enfants, as is Jardim just a little further along the river. There is more of a cocktail atmosphere at these two bars

Bar Paniek is another bar we have enjoyed: it’s got a more quirky and somewhat arty vibe, and is located on the Kattendijkdok with an industrial waterside feel and a standard drink selection: come for a glass of wine or a Seefbeer, rather than to hang with the cocktail crowd. Bar Paniek has also served as a nice location for food and second hand markets in the past. I get the impression that the Cadix Wijk in this area is an up-and-coming one.

summerbarcollage
Antwerp summer bars

Also part of ZVA, the Zomerfabriek -is a spacious urban- style bar in Zurenborg, with a busy programme of regular events (e.g. urban sports, dance workshops) aimed mostly at a younger crowd, but the bar itself is a really nice place for anyone wanting a food and drink.

Right in the centre of the city is Strandhof at Kavka. Kavka is a youth-club but even as a crumbly middle-aged person, I really liked being able to go to a summer bar here, two years ago, in the courtyard of this attractive building on Oudaan. It was missed last summer. It’s a perfect location if you are shopping or running errands in the centre and want to get away from busy shops or sticky streets.

A Dozen Dates For Your Summer Diary:

1) On the 11th July, head to Groenplaats for Vlaanderen Feest (the kids entertainments start at midday, courtesy of Ketnet) and the evening entertainment begins on the Grote Markt at 17.45. Both squares will have stages, music, drink, activities and dancing. This is the Day of the Flemish Community, not to be confused with Belgium’s National Day (see number 5, below)

Groenplaats
Groenplaats

2) On the 15th July, it’s the usual second hand book market on de Coninckplein in front of Permeke Library, starting at 10am.

3) Food and Drinks Festival Fiesta Europa is on Groenplaats for five days from the 18th July

4) On 20th -21st July it’s Borgerwood Musical festival at Trix music venue and Spoor Oost

5) 21st of July is a national holiday in Belgium, it being Belgian National Day What better way to celebrate than by going to Roller Disco Dageraad ? It’s on all day from 1pm on Dageraadplaats: bring your skates if you have them (there will be a limited number for hire if you don’t) and dress as per roller disco style!

belgium-flag-1332904_640
The 21st July is Belgium’s National Day

6) Staying on Dageraadplaats for the 22nd July for Rommelmarkt Dageraad. These second hand markets are pretty good as many of the local residents are quite well-heeled…

7) Art Lovers: on 29th July it’s Lambermontmartre -support local artists, photographers and creatives while enjoying outdoor food, drinks and music. Free, from midday -in front of the museum of modern art (aka KMSKA).

8) On the 3rd August Flying Pig is at Antwerp’s Theaterplein. Outdoor evening drinks, DJs and music from 5pm.

sommar
Sommar

9) Also on the 3rd August and continuing on to the 4th it’s annual music festival Linkerwoofer. Tickets here – this is a kid-friendly event.

10) Stay up late and visit your favourite Antwerp museum on the 4th August because it’s the annual Antwerp Museum Night

11) The next day (5th August) you can sing your heart out at Antwerp Zingt. This is a super-friendly, kid-friendly event based around the simple idea that it is fun for a community to get together in song. As well as local songs, there are usually plenty of well-known tunes that everyone can join in with, and a song sheet to help you along. Free, on the Gedempte Zuiderdokken from 6pm

16) And last, but never least, it is the rainbow jewel in the crown of the Antwerp summer: from 8th-12th August it’s Antwerp Pride. The Parade is on the Saturday, starting at 2pm and taking this route: Route: Vlaamse Kaai (start) – Verschansingsstraat – Leopold De Waelplaats – Karel Rogierstraat – Marnixplaats – Scheldestraat – Scheldekaaien – Sint-Pietersvliet (end). For the full program (including pre- and post Pride events) see here.

1) For just 2 euros per day per kid there’s Speel -O- Rama at Zuiderpershuis

2) Time your drinking to coincide with kids’ read-aloud: daily stories at the outdoor library in the Zomerbar.

3) Check out these sport programs and activities (you need to register for these and pay a fee when you do so). Choose your activity and click on “inschrijven”. Here is the full list For other types of workshops, it is worth looking at the websites of local museums such as MUHKA who have additional holiday workshops for kids.

4) For cheap indoor play there is Sportopia at the Park Loods building (Park Spoor Noord)

5) The kids’ workshops and activities which have previously been held at Cafe Het Steen have moved to a new venue further along the river on the Drogendokkenweg, and is now called STORMKOP. Here’s their program.

Antwerp locals will be familiar with Aper’eau, providers of alfresco summer drinks, music and food. On Friday from 5pm they begin their season with the summer kick-off event on Grote Markt

Saturday

internationalday 2

Shout out to our favourite international school, who hold their unmissable International Day event just once every two years, making it extra special (particularly as this year is the 50th anniversary of the school). Experience the countries and cultures that make up this diverse learning community of young people, families and staff, as they showcase food, activities, performances and music from around the world, from 10am -5pm on the school’s campus in Ekeren.

It’s Dag van de Gever in Antwerp’s second-hand stores, so a good time to make space and take down unwanted goods which are in good condition to one of the “Kringloopwinkels” in the city. Get a free potplant, and the chance to win a weekend away. There are 8 shops in the Antwerp area: Abdijstraat 104, 2020 Antwerpen-Kiel; Bredabaan 397, 2170 Merksem; Kapelsestraat 237, 2950 Kapellen; Kroonstraat 166, 2140 Borgerhout; Sint-Jorispoort 29, 2000 Antwerpen; Venstraat 153 b, 2900 Schoten; Vosstraat 305, 2100 Deurne and Bredabaan 651, 2930 Brasschaat

A choice of street parties back in town: it’s the Marnix Feest (pic below left) on Marnixplaats from 2pm, where there will be a street party, complete with kids’ entertainment, music, food and drinks until 10pm or the Twintig Achtien free festival (pic below right, courtesy of Twintig Achtien) along the Konijnenwei from 13.30.

Sunday

It’s the first Sunday of the month, so … Sunday shopping in and around the city centre.

Go and discover creative Berchem at the Made In Berchem and learn why it is becoming a hotspot for innovative and artistic ventures taking place in these locations around the district. Map and brochure to download here.

It’s the annual PVDA Divercity Festival at Park Spoor Noord from 2pm -8pm. Music, food and a footie tournament. Also in Park Spoor Noord it’s the Pink Ladies Games.

Open Werven Dag opens up construction and development sites in and around Antwerp to the public. This is more interesting than it might sound (if you are someone who is often frustrated by the amount of construction which seems to take place around the city, you might feel averse to visiting an actual construction site). Last year, we went on a cool below-ground tour of the Noorderlijn works. This year, I’m thinking of seeing this building.

Goegekregen are holding a Vinyl Sale at HAAR from 10am -5pm and Swan Market are on Grote Markt from 11 -6pm.

It’s to be a weekend of sunshine, with increasingly warmer temperatures – getting up to 23 degrees on Sunday!

Antwerp is Car Free all day Sunday, so don’t attempt to drive into the city centre that day. Instead, the streets of the centre and old town will be open for everyone to enjoy by foot, bike, wheelchair or other form of personal non-motorised transport. There is loads to do with plenty of stands and activities along Meir (where there will be an info point) and in other squares. Residents may also sell off their unwanted goods on the streets on car free day.  There is always plenty for kids to enjoy.

… and you could swing by Grote Markt from midday for lunch at Eva VZW’s Longest Veggie Table: bring your own picnic or buy from the stands which are serving this event.

Last chance to enjoy Open- air swimming pools today.

The party continues at Molly’s with Beatles covers from midday.

On de Conninckplein (in front of Permeke Library) it’s the monthly second-hand book and comics fair from 10am.

And Goegekregen are in the Stadspark from 9am -second-hand, retro fleamarket with a chilled social vibe, so usually there’s affordable food and drink available. I’ve even seen people getting a 5 euro haircut at this edition of the popular local fleamarket.

After a windy and autumnal week, the weekend also looks pretty variable with showers expected throughout the weekend. There will be dry and sunnier periods too though. Temps from around 15 – 17 degrees.

Look for the ‘vlieg’ sign for activities and venues with activities and exhibits of particular interest to kids.

The (re)opening party of Het Paleis continues, with a Family Day at the kids’ theatre on Theaterplein, from 11am.

Alternatively, dance the afternoon and evening away at Bar Nord’s Sunday Matinee, from 2pm. It’s large covered area means that rain can’t spoil play.

The weather continues to become more autumnal with possibilities of showers on Friday and Saturday (afternoon). Sunday could well be dry all day. Temperatures remain mild though (around 17 degrees).

After a summer break, BATS begin their monthly open evenings once again at The Little Theatre (Paardenmarkt 111, first Friday of the month, from 8.30pm), where they open their doors (and their friendly, bijoux bar area) to anyone who would like to inform themselves about getting involved on stage or behind the scenes.

The Big Fat Summer Post 2017

sun-159392_640This post covers the next month while I am on holiday (even bloggers need a break from time to time). The first section lists some ongoing activities, whilst the second section lists specific activities and events by date.

I’ll be back at the start of August -if you feel so inclined you can follow my #nessascityblogUSA adventures on Instagram

In the meantime, here are some Antwerp highlights which I am sorry to be missing   …

During or throughout July

ZVAflagFThe most useful thing to know is the Zomer van Antwerpen website, which lists all the special summer events provided by the City of Antwerp, including theatre performances, summer bars, live music and Cinema Urbana (outdoor cinema venue next to The Schelde, opens in August). You can also buy tickets for those events which are not free, but many are, as is access to the summer bars of course.  Zomerfabriek has a bit more of a clubby vibe to it, while the Zomerbar on Sloepenweg has a very broad appeal, and is probably better for younger kids -there’s a playground as well as an outdoor library there. Muziek in de Wijk is pretty much as the name (Music in the Neighbourhood) suggests -stages with live music on local squares or parks, and is free. Again, these are very much occasions for all ages and there are refreshments available. It’s a good chance to hear some local bands. Other summer bars which I really like are Bar Noord in Park Spoor Noord and Smokey Jo’s Cantina -both kid-friendly, also Bar Paniek right next to the water on the Kattendijkdok.

summerbarsF
Antwerp Summer Bars

Another special program of summer performances and music can be found at the Openlucht Theater (OLT) at Rivierenhof (Open Air Theatre) which is a really nice place to see a band on a summer’s evening. Order tickets via the site (some sell out quickly and more well known performers are already sold out) but there are also free shows on Fridays (search for Gratis Vrijdagen) .

And the View on The Zoo ferris wheel is on Astridplein throughout July

The Sinksenfoor (funfair) is open daily in Park Spoor Oost until 9th July.

For kids up to the age of 13, there is Speel-O-Rama in the Zuiderpershuis every week day for 2 euros per kid (17th July -11th August)

During summer Antwerp offers two open-air swimming pools which are now open! It is free to swim at Boekenberg, but there is a small entrance charge at the Linkeroever pool (it is also recommended that you have a 1 euro coin with you to use the lockers; and your A-kaart, if you have one).

Buurtpleintjes is an initiative from Stad Antwerpen offering free sporting activities on local squares around the city. Last year, my son really enjoyed a series of free basketball lessons on Sint Andriesplaats as part of this initiative. Start by checking here to see what’s on offer near you.

A grab-bag of events in order of date…

meirshopping

Saturday July 1st You can join a ghostwalk for 7,50, starting at 7pm from Steen

Sunday 2nd July: Goegekregen in the Stadspark these are always big and very sociable. There’s pretty much nothing you can’t get on the cheap here -including- usually – a haircut.

belgium-1758863_640
21st July Fete des Belges / Nationale feestdag van België/ Belgischer Nationalfeiertag

Friday July 21st:  It is Belgium’s National Day and a public holiday

Friday July 21st: Re:set fleamarket at Het Eiland from 11am -5.30. Last time I went to Het Eiland it was a little quiet in terms of the stands (I guess some stand holders are on their summer holidays) but even so, it is worth going to Het Eiland to see the location. A relaxed bar with a great view of MAS. This is a pop-up in the Port of Antwerp old harbour building.

and a (free) Roller Disco on Dageraadplaats from 11am -10pm, with food, music, yoga and art installations.

antwerpmuseaF
Antwerp Museums

Wednesday July 26th -City of Antwerp museums are FREE on the last Wednesday of the month

and Brocantwerpen is on the Grote Markt (10am -6pm)

Friday 28th July -Critical Mass. Assemble 6pm on Theaterplein with your bike for an hour’s cycling round Antwerp and help reclaim the street for bikes.

Saturday July 29th You can join a ghostwalk for 7,50, starting at 7pm from Steen

Sunday 30th July –Lambermontmartre art market from midday

Lastly a random tip …botannicsF

If the activity and heat of summer in the city get a bit much, did you know that Antwerp has a Botanical Garden?  It’s a haven of green and peace. Sit on the lawns or benches, or wander through to the back and find De Serre

And so …

Enjoy July in beautiful Antwerp! I hope this post serves as a useful pick ‘n’ mix for the time that there are no weekly posts. Feel free to add comments & ideas in the below. See y’all in August!

NEXT POSTING TOMORROW! JUNE 29TH –THE BIG FAT SUMMER POST 🙂

It’s Bier Passie Weekend on the Groenplaats all weekend, starting on Friday at 5. It costs 2 euros in, and 2 euros (jetons) for every beer you try. I went last year and enjoyed the champagne beer … among others. On Saturday it starts at 1pm (closes at midnight) and on Sunday you can begin drinking at 11 (closes 8pm).

HERE IS THE MAP!

scheldeview
View of The Scheldt from Steenplein

Friday
Flying Pig (outdoor drinks, DJs & music) is on Steenplein from 5pm. I really like this location for it, as it is next to the Schelde and you can sit at the waterside with your drinks and enjoy the sunset if it is a clear evening.

Saturday

feriaandaluza2017

Feria Andaluza is a Spanish festival at Waagnatie on the Rijnkaai. Food, drinks, and Andalusian culture to be enjoyed -this is free entry and on both Saturday (from 4pm) and Sunday (from midday). There will be a stage, hosting a variety of performances -this event is something of a must if you are a Flamenco fan.

Sunday

Bier Passie and Feria Andaluza continue ….

Sunday is a good day if you want to snoop about browsing local markets. You could easily do all three of these by bike:

SNITT are holding a secondhand and vintage clothing sale down at Stack from 10am- 6pm. “Stack” is the containers down by the Schelde which has been converted into outlets. Also in this area is Bar Jardim (summer pop up bar).

Meanwhile Ieder Zenne Meug (design market) are not far away at Het Eiland from 11am, while local artists are showing and selling their wares at Lambermontmartre, Leopold de Waelplaats (that’s right in front of the fine art gallery aka KMSKA), from midday. This is always a nice occasion, with space to drink and snack as well as see the art, which is varied and colourful -everything from postcards to panels.

wielerbuurtfeestF
Pacificatiestraat

Wielerbuurtfeest (Pacificatiestraat) from midday -8pm is a local family-friendly party based around biking. It’s free, but you need to register for the BBQ (15e) which is at 6pm. There’s also kids entertainment, bouncy castle, bike engraving, races….

And thanks to the Nessascityblog reader who spotted this street party on Nieuwstad (Theaterplein) which looks like a good way to round off the weekend, and starts at 3pm.

The weather is going to cool off a little with temperatures going down to 20 or 21 over the weekend. It’s predicted to stay dry though.

Miscellaneous

NEXT POST – 15th June, for the weekend of 16/ 17/ 18 June – start of Zomer van Antwerpen!

HERE’S THE MAPTASTICALLY GOOGLY GOOGLE MAP for this very weekend …

Friday

Start your weekend at Antwerp’s most striking recent architectural addition -the new Port of Antwerp ‘Haven Huis’ -with Flying Pig (drinks, music, DJs) on Zahahadidplein from 5pm until midnight.

Saturday

Bar Nord (previously Cargo Summer Bar) celebrates World Gin Day from midday until 10pm, with 30 brands, offering 60 types of gin, and DJs providing music. After party: HAVN Church, Italiëlei 8, 2000 Antwerp.

worldGinday

The Geefplein at Costa Sint Andries seems to be becoming a regular event on the second Saturday of the month, at the shelter near the Sint Andries community centre. I think ‘freecycling’ is the best translation to describe this event: bring household items which you no longer need and simply give them away. Take what you need from what others offer. Free, 11am – 6pm.

At T’ Werkhuys between 1pm and 5pm there is a Rommelmarkt (flea market), supported by the Antwerp Kringwinkels (second hand shops) featuring drinks, and also an exhibition about Ghana. Proceeds go to 11.11.11 which works with local organisations and volunteers for a fairer world. On Sint Jansplein there is also the regular rommelmarkt from 9am.

Grand Bazar Shopping centre has some treats and activities for a nostalgic old-school  Fathers Day between 1 and 5pm.

Meanwhile Scoop store on Kloosterstraat open a Live Art Weekend at 6pm, with online bidding for works at hammertime.be until 15th June. The proceeds go to Moeders voor Moeders which supports struggling families in the area with food packages, children clothing, school equipment and other essentials.

Scoopstore
Live Art Weekend @SCOOPstore by Duverger Home and Raphaël Kettani

On Saturdays in June, July and August (excl. 5th & 19th Aug) Port of Antwerp offers free cycling tours of the port between 12 -5pm, covering 45km in all (but with regular stops for breaks) and starting at MAS. This is free but you need to register by clicking on ‘schrijf je in’. Make sure your bike is in good condition, and bring your own picnic in a backpack or panier.

Sunday

RoseF

Provincie Antwerpen offers ‘Rose Day’ at Rivierenhof. Gardening friends of mine gave this event a glowing review last year. See the roses grown at Rivierenhof between the Rozentuin and Kasteel Rivierenhof. Purchase roses, enjoy music and entertainment with a rosy theme; between 11am and 6pm. Free.

It’s the Silver Run today -not just a run but a social event which also includes foodtrucks, drinks, music and lots of other entertainment.

Children aged 6-13 will enjoy this Henna tattoo workshop activity at Permeke library, from 11- 1pm. Free, no need to reserve.

ShoobilSacha
Patent Pending Painting by Sacha Eckes

Art lovers can get a Sunday afternoon fix at the opening of an exhibition of the work of Sacha Eckes and cartoonist, Ansu.

Markt van Morgen is on the Kloosterstraat from midday until 6 – very handy for a last minute gift or card for Father’s Day, if you need one!

After the weather nose-dived this week, the weekend is looking a bit better, with warmer temperatures (especially on Sunday where the top temp is predicted to be 25) and a low chance of showers.

Battle re-enactment

NEXT POST: 8TH JUNE

I am away this weekend and the thing I am most sorry to miss is De Quaeye Werelt, which is on the Saturday and Sunday from 10 – 6pm. As a family, we go to this every year. It is a re-enactment event and the year is 1477 and Sterckshof (Rivierenhof) is transformed into a Medieval Village for the weekend. It’s great to see the re-enactors in character roles and wearing their medieval costumes. There are also all sorts of stall and stands selling olde worlde food, drink, clothing and accessories. There is even a medieval apothecary. For kids, there is a puppet theatre and usually some beheading, as well as the space of Sterckshof to run around and enjoy. There is also music. One of the main attractions is a battle re-enactment that takes place at 3pm. This is very noisy and action packed. You may wish to bring ear-defenders for youngsters. It is free, and the food and drink are reasonably priced, but it’s also fine to take a picnic of your own. I totally recommend this event!

Indiafestival

The biggest fleamarket this weekend can be found on Sint Jansplein from 10 am, while on Groenplaats there’s an Indian festival from 1pm. Find out more here.

Thrill seekers! Antwerp’s annual funfair –Sinksenfoor -opens at Spoor Oost. The Grand Opening starts at 2pm. Sinksenfoor will be there until the 9th July.

… For something a bit different – catch a brass band or two at Veemarkt from 2pm …

Sunday

First Sunday of the month means Sunday shopping and it would be a good idea to combine this with Boulevard National which takes place round the Nationalestraat and the Kammenstraat. Shops will be open but there will also be stands, food, tastings and music between midday and 6pm. Alternatively, stop for a pint and a great sandwich at one of my favourite Antwerp bars – An Sibhin.

Go dancing under a bridge at Draakplaats at 3pm, or enjoy bands for free at Borgerhout Bougeert from 4pm.

Register for The Sint Andries run in the area on the same day, or check out Ieder Zenne Meug design market on Bogaard Plein if you are not feeling quite that energetic.

Temperatures are going to be pleasant this weekend, but cooling off to the early 20s after Friday, which will be pretty hot at 26 degrees. Friday afternoon could also see some storms, and there is the possibility of light rain on Saturday at around lunch time. Sunday will be the coolest day, but should be dry all day

Miscellaneous

Please note that during July I will be away. As was the case last year, there will be a Big Fat Summer Post (pressing on the 29th June) for the time that I am not here to write weekly posts.

Monday is a public holiday (Pentecost) and there will be a Goegekregen fleamarket on Theaterplein, from 9am -6pm.
