This weekend in Antwerp: 11th, 12th & 13th October

Nessascityblog: A Market Edition

It seems to be market weekend in Antwerp so keep reading if you enjoy food markets, retro markets, browsing  for second hand goods or visiting lifestyle markets: there’s loads to choose from this weekend. And if you need to stop for a snack, Smaakmeesters 2019 Food Festival -a two week food event at various locations around the city- finishes up this weekend.

What’s your favourite market? If I’ve missed one, let me know!

DOKMARKTF
Dokmarkt

Dokmarkt is the market where you can also start your weekend: food and drink stands

sell everything from curry to cavas for consuming on the spot with friends, but a number of stands offer local products to purchase and take home. My favourites are the pickles and chutneys from Spijs & Valies, and gin from Save The Queen.

Saturday

The Mega Grote Rommelmarkt on Sint Jansplein from 10am- 6pm is indeed mega-big: you can find anything here, from clothing to bikes to electrical parts. It’s a busy, local market in a diverse area of the city. If you’re stopping for a drink after the market, I recommend the bar Rode 7 which is also on the square, and also serves good, fresh food. Rode 7 supports local artists by displaying their work.

Back in the city centre, Swan Market is a totally different type of market: the stalls are held by individuals, start-ups and local creatives, some of whom come from The Netherlands, where Swan Market also hold events. Swan Market is hip, and always insta-ready. You can find stationery, accessories, clothing, jewellery, household items and food stands. There’s usually music, and it’s quite kid-friendly too. Swan Market is on Grote Markt from 11am- 6pm.

Foodies will also enjoy Kraakvers on the Sint Andriesplaats from 10am -3pm. Kraakvers also sells locally made food products -including beers, preserves and bread – as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Sunday

Cyclists will enjoy this small bike market on Giraffenplein (behind the zoo) from 10am- 5pm. Hosted by Vitesse Coffee Bar, you will be able to browse vintage bikes and pick up any spare parts you need for your bike.

Markt van Morgen is a little like Swan Market, but I like it better -it’s smaller and less busy and stressful, but does a great job of packing in a wide variety of nice products into a small space. The location is also nice, and many of the shops along Kloosterstraat are worth browsing while you are there, especially if you like antiques.

Lovers of all things retro should make their way to The Vintage Market Live -6th Edition at the Sint-Jan-Evangelistkerk (aka De Peperbus Kerk) in Borgerhout. Vintage clothing, toys, design and furniture will be for sale. This is the only market that isn’t free, but it’s only 2 euros to go in.

Goegekregen is one of the best known providers of second hand markets in Antwerp, holding frequent events across the city. This weekend they can be found along the Singel (Desguinlei/Kielsevest) from 9am-6pm. This is always a big market offering clothes, toys, furniture and household goods. There’s always a stand selling food and drinks at Goegekregen markets too, and a friendly atmosphere.

We could see some scattered showers on Friday, but temperatures will rise on Saturday (18 degrees max) and Sunday (23 degrees max) when it should also be dry (though cloudy).

This weekend in Antwerp: 4th, 5th & 6th October

I am away in London (follow #nessascityblogLondon for pics if you are interested) at the moment, so it’s just a mini-post this week.
Screenshot 2019-09-26 at 19.15.35It’s Antwerp Fashion Weekend 2019 ! The city that brought the world The Antwerp Six enjoys a full weekend of fashion shows and catwalks at various locations around the city, in-store events and offers, a fashion run, evening shopping and a Fashion Sweep on Kammenstraat – this last one to be particularly recommended for lovers of secondhand fashion and given that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. Bring your clean, pre-loved clothing to Kammenstraat and get the change to go home with a new-to-you piece, or pieces.

Screen Shot 2019-09-30 at 15.27.44A fortnight of culinary treats and events opens on Saturday: it’s Smaakmeesters 2019 but if you’re only here for the beer this weekend then Modeste Beer Festival at de Konninck Brewery on Saturday and Sunday is for you

Over at Rivierenhof, on Sunday it’s the annual Ecodroom Event – from 1pm -6pm, featuring a fleamarket, stalls and a repair café.

This animal festival (also on Sunday) called Beestig! (beastly) will please all animal lovers, and offers lots of child and family friendly activities.

Shops are open on Sunday -coinciding with Fashion Weekend.

The weather may continue to feel autumnal, with top temperatures (18 degrees) on Saturday, which should also be dry. Some showers on Sunday.

This weekend in Antwerp: 26th, 27th & 28th October

Here’s the Google Map to help you find your way around Antwerp this weekend.

Antwerp gastro-fest Smaakmeesters continues this weekend until the end of the month with walks, offers, foodie workshops and markets …

Friday

criticalmasshalloween

It’s the Hallowe’en edition of Critical Mass! Assemble as usual at 6pm with your bike on Theaterplein. After a group bike-ride of about an hour around Antwerp, you will -if you have dressed up for the occasion be rewarded with a mug of soup on arrival at Sint-Paulusplaats, courtesy of veggie fast food restaurant De Krewelligen Bidet (which comes personally recommended -tasty, cheap home-cooked vegetarian & vegan fast-food).

Last week I mentioned Antwerp’s newest market: Dokmarket, which takes place weekly on Fridays from 3pm- 8pm and finally last week I went along to Napoleonkaai where I enjoyed a cava and a quiche from Quichenette, bought some delicious Save The Queen honey gin and a couple of jars of pickles from Spijs en Valies. It’s a nice mix of local products to eat or drink on the spot or to buy to take home. Although partly covered, it’s one to enjoy while it’s still dry and not too cold.

Saturday

IrishTimes

It’s the ABC (Antiques, Brocante, Curiosa) at Den Beulebak from 11am-5pm.

If you are keen to start your Hallowe’en festivities, then The Irish Times (just off Grote Markt) is the place to start tonight. It’s a fancy dress party (of course) with live music from 10pm. Other Irish pubs will be holding events on the day itself (Wednesday -see miscellaneous).

Union Love Affair is a festival taking place on Steenplein from midday until midnight – funk, hip-hop, DJs -only 5 euros in, plus this also includes drinks jetons for two drinks… you do the maths.

Sunday

dayofthedeadCommemorating and celebrating The Day of The Dead has become an annual event at the MAS museum, Eilandje. This takes place on the 8th floor of the museum from 3pm -6pm. Visitors are invited to bring a photograph or keepsake associated with a loved one who has died.  This event is free and includes the opportunity to see the exhibition Feest.

A reminder that clocks go back an hour today!

The weather is going to feel cooler and more autumnal (11-13 degrees) with a possibility of some showers on Saturday and on Sunday too.

I am pleased to share this interview I did for The Bulletin about life in Antwerp.

Next Wednesday is the last Wednesday of the month which means that Antwerp City museums are free. Of particular interest at the moment might be the De Reede Museum which is presently exhibiting Edvard Munch’s The Scream.

Also on the last Wednesday of the month, you can also catch a free classical concert at 2.30pm at the Vleeshuis.
Wednesday is Hallowe’en: Irish pubs around the city are always a good bet: fancy dress party  & games at Kelly’s on Keyserlei; the traditional Annual Hallowe’en Quiz & fancy dress at An Sibhin on Nationalestraat (register teams via the Facebook page);  and a big fancy dress party at Molly’s on Jezuitenrui, with costumes, games, prizes and free candy ..)

November 1st is a public holiday. There will be a holiday “rommelmarkt” on Theaterplein, courtesy of Goegekregen, from 9am -6pm.

For foodies: Smaakmeesters 2018 The old town, Eilandje and the Zuid are the key areas for this festival of food, which has an extensive program (see the Smaakmeesters link) of markets, activities, food orientated guided walks and exhibitions

For shoppers: Weekend van de Klant means lots of promos and offers in participating stores (this coincides with Antwerp Fashion Weekend)

For party people: The re-opening of Plein Publiek (new location). This restaurant/ bar/ night venue was previously in the Sint Andries area, in the centre of the ‘Fierensblokken’ and hosted a variety of events. It’s relocating to D’Herbouvillekaai 19 (just south of the Kaaien) and the opening festivities will take place over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Friday

Head to the Brederodefeesten for this weekend’s Saturday street party

Saturday

Sint Andries Harvest Festival is a new event on Sint Andriesplaats -a relaxed, community-focused square near the Kloosterstraat and Nationalestraat. From 1pm there will be music, drink, snack food and a bouncy castle for kids.

Swan Market on Grote Markt

Sunday

Swan Market is on Grote Markt from 11- 6pm today, with its usual offering of stalls selling products such as jewellery, stationery, accessories, and hand-made goods. There’s also always food, drink and a kids’ area.

If that’s not enough consumerism for you, then -being the first Sunday of the month – it’s also Shopping Sunday in Antwerp (this coincides with Antwerp Fashion Weekend).
The weather looks like it will be pleasant and dry this weekend (especially on Friday and Saturday, but remaining mild for Sunday too).

For a more relaxed Sunday try Ecodroom at Riviernhof: info stands, workshops, a repair cafe, and a second hand market -all focused on the idea of a greener way of life.

Miscellaneous

Think Pink’s “Race For The Cure” last weekend was a busy and lively event. There was a multi-generational effort from my family (my mum, myself and my son) who crossed the finish line.  Congratulations to all who ran. If you’d like to donate to this great cause click here to make a contribution.

If you would like to get involved with BATS VZW -Antwerp’s English speaking theatre group, now might be the time! BATS do a panto every year in January. This year it’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and auditions take place soon.

I’ll be away this week in London. If you’d like to follow via Instagram, check out the hashtag #nessascityblogLondon Next week’s Antwerp post will be a brief round-up, as I won’t be here, or have much time on my hands, as I will be hoofing it round some London galleries supervising an Arts trip.

This Weekend: September 29th – 1st October

*NEXT POST OCTOBER 5TH*

This weekend it’s all about two-day events:

SO HERE’S THE MAP…

AFW2017
pic courtesy of Antwerp Fashion Weekend (2017)

FASHION
: It is Antwerp Fashion Weekend! There are four key areas to shop and enjoy events like fashion shows, because AFW coincides with Weekend van de Klant in Belgium, and Sunday shopping.

ART: Continuing this weekend on Saturday and on Sunday is Open Ateliers which offers the opportunity to see artists and their work in the context of their own workshops and ateliers. On the OA website, you can select the medium which most interests you and pick which ateliers and art spaces you would like to see, or you can head to Zuiderperhuis between 11am and 6pm (on both Saturday and Sunday) for an overview of the whole event.

openateliers2017

FOOD: Also over both days it’s food fest Smaakmeesters: tastings, walks and workshops at various locations round the city. The four key locations are Groenplaats, Leopold de Waelplaats, Nassaustraat and Vrijdagmarkt, with programmes for Saturday and Sunday.

BEER: If beer is more your cup of tea. then the Modeste Beer Festival is on over at the de Koninck Brewery from 11am -7pm. I like this one -many different beers, not too pricey and a very informal atmosphere. If the weather is nice, there’s space to hang out outside too.

Friday

This week’s “and now for something slightly different” spot is occupied by this vernissage at MAF from 7.30pm (Keistraat 1, 2000 Antwerp).  I have to admit a certain bias here: I own a large trunk painted by Djuna, and although it is assigned the inglorious function of containing my dirty laundry, it is very beautiful.

eros and thanatos 2

The last Friday of the month means Critical Mass: assemble on Theaterplein at 6pm as usual -it’s the back-to-college edition, but everyone is welcome, as ever.

Or you could go and get your household items (PCs, electrical goods, furniture or sewing work) fixed for free at The Repair Café, ‘Twerkhuys, Borgerhout between 4 and 7pm.

Saturday

There’s a food fest on Jezusstraat (off Meir) from 10am -10pm to coincide with the Antwerp Fashion Weekend, while Grand Bazar shopping centre has a surprise offer for their Dag van de Klant between 10am- 6.30pm.

Sunday

Shops in Stadsfeestzaal

It’s the first Sunday of the month, so Antwerp shops are open for continued enjoyment of AFW, and general shopping.

A dry, mild weekend is forecast with some sun and temperatures of around 16 degrees. Friday afternoon/ evening will be warmest, and might be the best time for one more “terasje”…
