This weekend in Antwerp: 11th, 12th & 13th May

OLVoval

Right once again I am trying to efficiently bring you a decent pick of events for this weekend, in a hurry as I am back to the UK this weekend to attend the party of the century -literally: it’s my grandmother’s birthday and she is 100 years old.

Anyway, for those of you not attending this once-in-a-lifetime event, here goes with your quick weekly Antwerp run-down:

Foodies – it is Antwerpen Proeft all this weekend, at Waagnatie: food suppliers, food trucks, brewers and wine merchants will be the stall holders for offering meals and samples of their wares all weekend. Tickets via the link for single days, or for the whole weekend.

Saturday

Saturday is likely to be dry and warm, so you may want to head to the other side of the river for kid-friendly Left Festival on Linkeroever. This is a free festival offering food, music, a fleamarket, kids’ entertainment and sport tournaments all in one location

Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 14.06.28

Alternatively, there’s the Laar Bazaar (pic, left) in Borgerhout, also offering an extensive fleamarket of secondhand goods including clothes.

Achterklap do city tours of Antwerp. This one, starting at 5pm, is in English.

Sunday

It’s Mothers Day today, and there are two more second markets open, courtesy of SNITT and Goegekregen: this one along the Singel and this one at HAAR on Montevideostraat.

Round off your weekend with a classic 1960s film:  Easy Rider at Cinema Zuid

The weather should stay nice up until Saturday. Sunday will be cooler, with the possibility of showers.

“Pint of Science was created in the UK in 2014 to make science accessible to anyone interested, including people without a scientific background, and kept growing ever since. Last year, 81.000 participants attended the festival across 10 countries . This year there are 21 countries taking part across the globe, including Belgium, where more than 1.500 participants are expected. ” (Pint of Science website)

Science fans – combine your enjoyment of a beer with your interest in new scientific research at one of the Pint of Science talks taking place in Antwerp next week on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday in bars around the town. Talks are in English and Dutch -check the website to find a talk near you.

Have a look at Stad Antwerp’s Baroque Antwerp a season of events and activities which celebrate the Baroque character of Antwerp, and the work of Rubens.

I’m pleased to share this blog post: Three Great Spots For When The Sun Is Shining which was published last week on the Stad Antwerpen website and optimistically describes three places in the city you might want to check out if the weather holds out …

PRIDE weekend: August 11th, 12th & 13th

This weekend Pride is the main event! There is too much on to list all events here, but the Antwerp Pride page has all the deets. They also have a Facebook page too. 2017 is a special year: Antwerp Pride turns ten! Already underway, and coinciding with Pride, is the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival – their Facebook Page is also very helpful in keeping you up-to-date with their many events.

Here’s the GOOGLE MAP for this weekend.

Friday

You could start your Pride weekend on Theaterplein at Roof of Love from 3pm …

Alternatively Apereau are serving drinks from 5pm at Hangar 26/ 27 on the Rijnkaai

Saturday

Screen Shot 2017-08-09 at 14.27.47

It’s Pride parade day! The Parade starts at 2pm and follows a route from the south, then along the river, thusly: Vlaamse Kaai (start) – Verschansingsstraat – Leopold De Waelplaats – Karel Rogierstraat – Marnixplaats – Scheldestraat – Scheldekaaien – Sint-Pietersvliet (end). The end of the route is right near Steenplein which is where the Pride Party will be happening from 4pm. This is free -there will be 2 stages with DJs, drinks and food. This is usually a busy, noisy and fun party.

Bos Uitstap is a day festival at Noord Kasteel Oost which only costs a fiver for a ticket (10 if you want the BBQ too).

For something a bit different, how about this Open Air Chess Tournament on Groenplaats (near the Rubens Statue) from 10am -18.30.

From 10am there is the regular fleamarket on Sint Jansplein -I like this one. It’s very diverse and Sint Jansplein is a sociable neighbourhood square, with a playground.

From 7pm until 11pm it is in Antwerp Night of The Churches in Antwerp: 25 churches in the Antwerp area will open their doors for free expos, music, bell ringing and guided tours. Twelve of these are close to the centre of the city and can be seen on this map.

Sunday

Yoyogi (part of ZvA) is back for Sundays in August -not just yoga, but music, games, workshops and other activities are on offer for free between 2- 7pm on the green at Rivierenhof.

Pride’s closing festival will be on Grote Markt from 1.30pm with music and live bands (including Army of Lovers) until 6.30pm. It might be advisable to get to Grote Markt on time if you are keen to attend, as the square will be closed once full.

At 3pm you can get a free guided tour of St Andries Church

Or get away from the city centre and head to Bar Noord (Park Spoor Noord) with Urban Sundayz (music, poetry, spoken word, soul food & DJs)

Screen Shot 2017-08-10 at 00.12.58
Urban Sundayz: free, from 14h -22h- Bar Noord

hetsteenateliersFA reminder for anyone with kids aged 6+ who need to be amused -Het Steen runs workshops each Sunday from 1pm. These are free and you can turn up at any time while they are on (bear in mind that this Sunday the area will be particularly busy because of the Pride Party) and while Belgian school holidays are on (i.e. until 1st September) the workshops will also take place on Saturdays.

The weather looks as though it will be similar to last weekend -cloudy with some sun and warm (but not hot) temperatures of around 20- 22 degrees. Chances of rain are low.

Miscellaneous

In case you missed it – have a read of Sally’s story on last week’s Nessascityblog Guest Post … a fascinating personal story. If you would like to share your story on a guest post, please get in touch: nessascityblog@gmail.com

sportopiaFSportopia is on in Park Spoor Noord (in the Loods building) for kids and teens until the 27th August.

Buurtpleintjes is an initiative from Stad Antwerpen offering free sporting activities on local squares around the city, until October. Last year, my son really enjoyed a series of free basketball lessons on Sint Andriesplaats as part of this initiative. Start by checking here to see what’s on offer near you.

Next Tuesday (15th) is a public holiday. But why? I hear you cry. Well,  it’s a Mother’s Day celebration which is unique to this area. This, from the Wikipedia Mother’s Day page:  “…There are also many people who celebrate Mother’s Day on 15 August instead; these are mostly people around Antwerp, who consider that day (Assumption) the classical Mother’s Day and the observance in May an invention for commercial reasons. It was originally established on that day as the result of a campaign by Frans Van Kuyck, a painter and Alderman from Antwerp”. Many cafés and restaurants will be offering Mother’s Day brunches and lunches, if you want to treat your mum, and there is a Rubensmarkt in the old town (round Suikerrui and along the kaaien by the river, near Steenplein) where the stall holders dress up in 17th century costume.

… And on Wednesdays at Bibfabriek, there are activities for children.

This weekend: 12th, 13th & 14th May

Here’s the GOOGLE MAP for this weekend!

Driesvnoten
Dries van Noten, Nationalestraat

Belmodo Fashion Days  (overstock sales) continue, finishing up this weekend on Sunday, offering the chance to get designer items from big names like Dries Van Noten, A.F. Vandevorst, Ann Demeulemeester, and Stephan Schneider among others. Belmodo sales also to be found on the first floor of Mercado on Groenplaats from 12- 6pm (not Sunday). There’s a map of participating outlets, or download the app.

Antwerpen Vertelt is a festival of story telling (Dutch) which takes place every two years. De Roma, Permeke Library and The Red Star Line Museum are the key venues for events. You can see the full agenda here

Friday

BocaderoF2
Bocadero, Waagnatie

Another summer bar opening! This time it’s the Beach bar-style Bocadero at Waagnatie, down by the Schelde which opens at 5pm for the summer (until September)

Saturday

During the day, from midday, it’s the Damse Feesten, a very child-friendly, free, local street party, comprising of races (bikes, scooters … even a unicyclist took part last year) for people of all ages, kids entertainment and a fleamarket.

The Eurovision Song Contest is of course the highlight of any right thinking person’s musical year, so embiggen your hair and make sure your contouring is on point:  Café Den Draak will be holding a Eurovision Night and showing the contest on the big screen.

Sunday

There’s a big fleamarket on Dageraadplaats from 9am. A good opportunity to go and discover this attractive local square if you don’t already know it. It’s a good place to hang out when the weather is warm and dry, with numerous café terraces, a playground for the kids, and space for them to play basketball or football.

sintannatunnel2
Sint Anna Tunnel

If you ventured over to Linkeroever for the Left Festival (which was excellent) as mentioned in last week’s post, you might be interested in returning for an evening market on Frederik van Eedenplein from 3pm. Frederik van Eedenplein is immediately on the right when you come out of the Sint Anna Tunnel.

Another summer bar (and restaurant)  Banningville opens at 2pm. I think this is a newcomer to the Antwerp summer bar scene this year, as I have only recently heard of it.

… And don’t forget that it is Mother’s Day in Belgium today. Need a last minute gift? Try Markt van Morgen on Kloosterstraat from midday …

The weather this weekend is looking a bit patchy. Temperatures are decent (18-19 degrees, tops) but there is very likely to be rain on Friday, and possibly on Saturday too. Sunday should be dry, but cloudy at times.

PRIDE
Antwerp Pride Parade

This weekend in Antwerp will be dominated by Antwerp Pride! You can’t have missed the rainbow flags fluttering high above the main streets in the centre of Antwerp. This is the 9th time that Antwerp has held a Pride event.

aqaf

The Antwerp Queer Arts Festival continues all weekend , finishing SundayBuy tickets online to get into events for less and keep track of the different events and activities on The AQAF Facebook page. (pic from AQAF)

Friday

Twilight bar (Theaterplein) would be a good way to kick off Pride at 3pm. For the full weekend schedule see the official Pride program.

Aper’eau is at Bolivarplaats from 5pm, with its usual offering of drinks to start the weekend with some alfresco socialising, and Italian food for this edition.

For free gigs, once again there is a choice of venues: Dageraadplats at 7.30pm (followed by some Moroccan 70s funk at 9) or an hour later at Openlucht Theater/ Rivierenhof (doors open at 7 -no entry once the venue is full).

Saturday

steenpleinF
Steenplein for the WAVE party

The main Pride parade takes place today, starting at 2pm. At the same time, the free afterparty (WAVE) starts on Steenplein, and continues until 11.30pm. The parade route is as follows:

Start : Waterpoort, 2000 Antwerpen
Extended Route : Verschansingsstraat, Leopold de Waelplaats, Karel Rogierstraat, Marnixplaats, Scheldestraat, Scheldekaaien.
End point : Sint Pietersvliet, 2000 Antwerpen

The first parade float is expected to arrive at Steenplein at 4. In the past, I have watched the parade from near St Jansvliet and always been able to get a good view, and enjoy the great atmosphere that Pride brings to the city.

You might want to pimp your flipflops at Grand Bazar for the occasion!

Sunday

Markt van Morgen

Markt van Morgen is on Kloosterstraat from midday until 6pm – perfect for a last-minute Mother’s Day gift (see miscellaneous).

From 4pm -7pm at Rivierenhof, it’s Yoyogi again -an open performance opportunity for anyone who would like to come along and demonstrate their music, dance or performance skills, or to watch others. It’s free and there are also various workshops (e.g. kungfu, acro-yoga, ropeskipping, tai chi).

Swan Market is at Cargo bar, Park Spoor Noord.

SNITT is a vintage and second hand clothing market where you can swap or sell your items.

sun-310144_640Highest chance of showers is on Friday, but it’s looking likely to be warm over the whole weekend, and dry on Saturday and Sunday.

Miscellaneous

Here’s the map of all the places mentioned in this post, so you can find your way.

On Monday 15th, Antwerp celebrates its own Mother’s Day.  There’s a Rubens Market in the old town (around the Cathedral area) for the day.

beerF

Bollekesfeest (4-day beer festival, plus local food products) starts on Thursday evening at Steenplein and Grote Markt. This is fast become a very important and enjoyable annual fixture on the Antwerp calendar, even though the event only began in 2007. Great fun, also for kids, with activities and entertainment for younger ones on the Steenplein part of the festival.

(A night club -Klub Goud- will be opening on the 21st floor soon …)

There are a couple of events which take place over all four days:

Antwerpen Proeft is a food and drink festival at Waagnatie which is near Eilandje. You can get tickets per day, or for all four days. It takes place inside the events venue, but also outside at Bocadero, – a summer bar at this location, which opens officially next weekend on the 13th.

Another four day event is the Zeezichtfeesten on Dageraadplaats, with performances and activities for all ages.

Another edition of Handgemaakt (handmade) market in Kavka (on the Oudaan, opposite the big police station building) from 1pm -6pm. Free entry. I got some very pretty little pieces of jewellery here as Christmas gifts at the end of last year. Get a last minute Mother’s Day gift with a difference (see Sunday).

There’s a record fair at the bar Bato Batu on Lange Nieuwstraat, 12 -6pm, and MARTA (farmers’ market) takes place on Kattendijkdok between 9 and 4. MARTA is going to be a regular fixture on the first Saturday of each month.

Sunday

Sunday is Mother’s Day in Belgium  and in various countries around the world (not to be confused with the specifically Antwerp Mother’s Day on August 15th each year. Because we like to be different).

Bouger bouger is a nice neighbourhood event in Borgerhout on the Krugerplein food drink, DJs, a fleamarket and lots of space to play for kids.

wall2
works on the Frankrijklei, showing the old city wall.

Did you know that the roadworks on the Leien have unearthed a section of the Antwerp city wall built by the Spanish in the 16th?

On Sunday between 11 and 5pm you can go and see it (on the corner where Maria-Theresialei meets Frankrijklei).

There’s a Markt van Morgen from midday on Kloosterstraat -a market for local designers and creatives selling art, jewellery and accessories. There will also be food and DJs. Should you perchance have neglected to buy mum a gift, this would be a good place to put that right.

SKETCH_logo_blog

SKETCH is back, in Plein Publiek -its mission is to engage everyone in drawing and it provides the materials for you to join in, and local artists to inspire you. Even if you don’t want to draw you can come and watch the artists sketch and have a drink.

It’s the final chance to be involved in the Coming World Remember Me project at CWRM @ Het Steen where you can make a sculpture out of clay to honour one of the Belgian fallen of World War One. These sculptures will form an installation in Ypres which will be opened in 2018. Each one will incorporate a dog tag with the name of a soldier. You will be provided with the dog tag.

sun-151763_640

The weather is promising to be great -no, really, it is! No showers forecast this weekend, and a possible max of 25 degrees on Saturday, so get out and enjoy all the outside events without packing a bunch of raincoats and umbrellas. It might even be time to break out the sunscreen – especially for kids. Have a sunny weekend! (image from Pixabay)
