This weekend in Antwerp: 26th, 27th & 28th October

Here’s the Google Map to help you find your way around Antwerp this weekend.

Antwerp gastro-fest Smaakmeesters continues this weekend until the end of the month with walks, offers, foodie workshops and markets …

Friday

criticalmasshalloween

It’s the Hallowe’en edition of Critical Mass! Assemble as usual at 6pm with your bike on Theaterplein. After a group bike-ride of about an hour around Antwerp, you will -if you have dressed up for the occasion be rewarded with a mug of soup on arrival at Sint-Paulusplaats, courtesy of veggie fast food restaurant De Krewelligen Bidet (which comes personally recommended -tasty, cheap home-cooked vegetarian & vegan fast-food).

Last week I mentioned Antwerp’s newest market: Dokmarket, which takes place weekly on Fridays from 3pm- 8pm and finally last week I went along to Napoleonkaai where I enjoyed a cava and a quiche from Quichenette, bought some delicious Save The Queen honey gin and a couple of jars of pickles from Spijs en Valies. It’s a nice mix of local products to eat or drink on the spot or to buy to take home. Although partly covered, it’s one to enjoy while it’s still dry and not too cold.

Saturday

IrishTimes

It’s the ABC (Antiques, Brocante, Curiosa) at Den Beulebak from 11am-5pm.

If you are keen to start your Hallowe’en festivities, then The Irish Times (just off Grote Markt) is the place to start tonight. It’s a fancy dress party (of course) with live music from 10pm. Other Irish pubs will be holding events on the day itself (Wednesday -see miscellaneous).

Union Love Affair is a festival taking place on Steenplein from midday until midnight – funk, hip-hop, DJs -only 5 euros in, plus this also includes drinks jetons for two drinks… you do the maths.

Sunday

dayofthedeadCommemorating and celebrating The Day of The Dead has become an annual event at the MAS museum, Eilandje. This takes place on the 8th floor of the museum from 3pm -6pm. Visitors are invited to bring a photograph or keepsake associated with a loved one who has died.  This event is free and includes the opportunity to see the exhibition Feest.

A reminder that clocks go back an hour today!

The weather is going to feel cooler and more autumnal (11-13 degrees) with a possibility of some showers on Saturday and on Sunday too.

I am pleased to share this interview I did for The Bulletin about life in Antwerp.

Next Wednesday is the last Wednesday of the month which means that Antwerp City museums are free. Of particular interest at the moment might be the De Reede Museum which is presently exhibiting Edvard Munch’s The Scream.

Also on the last Wednesday of the month, you can also catch a free classical concert at 2.30pm at the Vleeshuis.
Wednesday is Hallowe’en: Irish pubs around the city are always a good bet: fancy dress party  & games at Kelly’s on Keyserlei; the traditional Annual Hallowe’en Quiz & fancy dress at An Sibhin on Nationalestraat (register teams via the Facebook page);  and a big fancy dress party at Molly’s on Jezuitenrui, with costumes, games, prizes and free candy ..)

November 1st is a public holiday. There will be a holiday “rommelmarkt” on Theaterplein, courtesy of Goegekregen, from 9am -6pm.

This weekend: 15th, 16th & 17th September

Next post: Thursday 21st September

HERE’S THE GOOGLE MAP

AND HERE’S ANOTHER MAP OF THE CAR-FREE AREA ON SUNDAY.

Friday

MollysF
Molly’s Irish Pub: Jezuietenrui 4

Swing by Molly’s Irish Pub -they’re celebrating a year under the management of Audrey and Bartek. Live music on Friday night from 7 -more on Sunday.

Part of Antwerp festival is still on, finishing up on Sunday

Saturday

Zuiderburen” is a new street festival taking place (also on Sunday) at the square in front of the fine art museum. Local bars and restaurants (Ellis Burger, Lucy Chang, Sum Sum, FinJan, Tartino Zuid, Poule & Poulette, Zaowang) will be taking part, and there will be music from cover bands and other live artists. Zuiderbuuren starts at 11am with a free aerobics session.

It’s the Haven Challenge –  starts at 1pm.

Sunday

AutovrijF
Autovrij (car-free) Day in Antwerp

Antwerp is Car Free all day Sunday, so don’t attempt to drive into the city centre that day. Instead, the streets of the centre and old town will be open for everyone to enjoy by foot, bike, wheelchair or other form of personal non-motorised transport. There is loads to do with plenty of stands and activities along Meir (where there will be an info point) and in other squares. Residents may also sell off their unwanted goods on the streets on car free day.  There is always plenty for kids to enjoy.

… and you could swing by Grote Markt from midday for lunch at Eva VZW’s Longest Veggie Table: bring your own picnic or buy from the stands which are serving this event.

Last chance to enjoy Open- air swimming pools today.

The party continues at Molly’s with Beatles covers from midday.

On de Conninckplein (in front of Permeke Library) it’s the monthly second-hand book and comics fair from 10am.

And Goegekregen are in the Stadspark from 9am -second-hand, retro fleamarket with a chilled social vibe, so usually there’s affordable food and drink available. I’ve even seen people getting a 5 euro haircut at this edition of the popular local fleamarket.

After a windy and autumnal week, the weekend also looks pretty variable with showers expected throughout the weekend. There will be dry and sunnier periods too though. Temps from around 15 – 17 degrees.

If you are sad about the closing of summer bars round Antwerp, then there is good news from Bar Noord (Park Spoor Noord) -it will be remaining open until 22nd October and will continue to hold events. Check their website and Facebook page for details!

[Next post: Thursday 22nd March]

HERE’S THE GOOGLE MAP WITH ALL THIS WEEKEND’S LOCATIONS.

Friday

MollysF
Molly’s is Antwerp’s oldest Irish Bar

Happy St Patrick’s Day! Irish bars in the town will be celebrating and my calculations tell me that if you are keen enough, it is perfectly possible to have a Guinness at all of them. Kelly’s, Irish Times, Molly’s and An Sibhin are the four Irish bars in Antwerp. Kelly’s on Keyserlei will be offering live music throughout the day, starting at midday, as will Irish Times on Grote Markt, which also promises give-aways in the form of hats, T-shirts and more. Molly’s also open their doors at that time, but the live music will be on from 8pm, and the party will include Guinness and Jameson promos. An Sibhin kicks off its 20th celebration of St Patricks Day at 5, with music and also food (oysters, Irish stew).

Not only that, but for the first time Antwerp City Hall will be joining other landmarks around the world in  going green and will be lit up for St Patrick’s Day.

Saturday

deslegteF

It’s the monthly free film night  at Het Roze Huis, where there will be a showing of Finnish film ‘Open Up To Me‘ at 8pm (free).

De Slegte book stores are taking part in Children’s Book Day (in Dutch) with read-alouds at 2 (8-12 year olds), 3 and 4pm (for 4-8 year olds). De Slegte book store is on Wapper.

De Groene Waterman bookstore is also taking part, between 2 and 4.30pm. You need to register your child(ren) by mail -groenewaterman@groenewaterman.com, or phone (03/232.93.94)

The Red Hackle Pipe Band and Highland Dancers of Belgium are celebrating their 50th year. To mark the opening of their birthday celebrations programme, they will be parading from St Jansvliet (starting at 12.30-1) and around the Grote Markt from 2pm.

redhacklegold

On Saturday afternoon De Roma theatre kicks off its Picknick The Streets event at 7.30, with music, film, reading, plus stands and stalls from community groups, committees, organisations and action groups from the area.

Sunday

If you have children (aged 8-14) interested in the Children’s University event it might still be possible to  register them for events and workshops which take place today at the University of Antwerp.

It’s the monthly book fair in front of the library (Permeke) on de Conninckplein from 10 until 4pm.

havenhuisF
The former Havenhuis

There are two second-hand sales on at the old Havenhuis (Entrepotkaai, near MAS) which has converted into a pop-up since Port of Antwerp moved. One is an opening for vintage furniture (Mr Frisko) and the other is Ieder Zenne Meug (vintage, retro design). Both start at 11am. This pop-up also now houses a new coffee bar called Het Eiland, which has a great view of MAS and Eilandje.

It is Father’s Day in Antwerp -celebrated today in Antwerp (along with Spain, Portugal and Italy) rather than June, because it is St. Joseph’s Day.

Alas, after last weekend’s pleasant weather, this weekend is not set to be quite so dry and sunny; some showers are likely on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon. Friday will be cooler but temperatures should be up a bit for the weekend (12-13 degrees).

Miscellaneous

We are fast approaching the very end of the Stadhuis 450 expo, which closes at the end of this month. If you have been meaning to go but haven’t, then time is running out ….

Talking of running -you can now register for the Antwerp 10 miles in April.

March is Youth Book Month.

And if you can afford/ cope with a hangover on Friday this week, don’t forget that it is Saint Patrick’s Day on Thursday. An Sibhin, Kelly’s and The Irish Times being Antwerp’s best known Irish Bars, and no doubt all worthy venues for a St Paddy’s Day party.

The weather this weekend is looking pretty chilly and sometimes bright, with fairly low chances of rain (20-30%) on both days.

A talented Grade 12 student of mine is singing in this concert at Elzenveld -it promises a mixture of choral pieces, modern Flemish folk pieces and some acapella numbers!

kinepolis

If you are interested in volunteer work in Antwerp and not sure where to look in order to find the right work for you, then this exhibition between 1pm and 5pm at Kinepolis Event Center looks like a good place to start. Volunteers Week 2016 runs until the 6th March.

Registration for the Antwerp Urban Trail is full, but you can see the runners off from Park Spoor Noord on a 12km route that will take them through the city and back to PSN. Sunday

foodtruck

Personally, I am falling out of love a bit with the current trend for Food Trucks, as I find that it often ends up being a lot more expensive than I anticipate (especially if you are en famille) given that it is usually marketed as ‘Street Food’, however for those who are still keen there is Dimange at Felix Pakhuis, in Eilandje.

There is an exhibition opening at Zeno X gallery in Borgerhout (Johannes Kahrs) -the preview for this exhibition takes place between 3 and 6pm..

BATS1950sshow

BATS (British American Theatrical Society)  begin preparing for their annual variety show. This year it has a 50s theme, so if you would like to be involved, I have been told that you must put on your blue suede shoes and hot-foot it to Paardenmarkt 111 for 7pm in order to be part of the show, which will take place at the end of May/ beginning of June, and will include music and sketches.

… It’s the first Sunday of the month so … Sunday shopping.

For kids aged 8 -14 with an interest in science, the Children’s University is taking place at the University of Antwerp (Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerpen). Children can attend lectures, workshops, quizzes and experiments and need to register here. All activities are free.

Although the temperatures aren’t predicted to be freezing cold this weekend, there is a chance of rain on both Saturday and Sunday, especially during the afternoons. Hope you have fun anyway, and thanks as ever for following and sharing- here, on Twitter @nessascityblog, and elsewhere.

Hallowe’en Special!

halloween

Increasingly, Hallowe’en is a festival that adults like to make a night of, rather than being solely an opportunity for kids to dress up.

During the day, however, if zombies are your thing there will be a Zombie Walk. Assemble in appropriate attire on Kammenstraat at 2pm. The parade will conclude with a free drink courtesy of Cafe Congé.

If you are heading out  in the evening sans enfants, you may find that the Irish bars in Antwerp are the ones which are most keen to celebrate Hallowe’en. I’m hyperlinking to their webpages, but if you are on Facebook, you might find more up-to-date information on the page of each pub there.

As previously mentioned An Sibhin on the Nationalestraat will be holding their Hallowe’en Quiz on the 29th this year (Thursday), to make space for the Rugby Final on the 31st itself. This will be shown on the pub’s big screen and is a popular and lively place to watch games.

On Friday you can join the Critical Mass cycling movement for a Hallowe’en Themed Bike Ride. Assemble on Theaterplein at 6. The bike ride concludes at Park Spoor Noord where there will be snacks and hot drinks.

On the 31st,  The Irish Times on Grote Markt will be showing the game too, and also having a Hallowe’en Dress-Up night.

Kelly’s  on Keyserlei (the street leading up to the main entrance of Antwerp Central Station) always goes a bundle for Hallowe’en, and it will be a busy night there.

On the Rijnkaai for free you can dance until late to a indie/ rock/ Britpop at London Calling Hallowe’en Special.

The Highlander Café will also be having a Hallowe’en part, starting at 9pm.

If you are looking to buy a pumpkin, I recommend the Saturday market, on Theaterplein. They usually still have them, even if you have left it to the last minute!

Enjoy your Hallowe’en. If you are taking your kids Trick or Treating, have fun and stay safe.
