Friday

Screen Shot 2019-06-18 at 14.12.22It’s international Yoga Day today and if you enjoy yoga or would like to try it, the Permeke library might be a good place to be. They have a programme of events for the day, taking place in their Leestuin (reading garden) which is a lovely secluded courtyard at the back of the library. Check out the Permeke Flow Yoga workshops for the day

Flying Pig are down on the Zuiderdokken ready to help you kick off your weekend with their usual blend of summer outside drinking, food trucks and DJs from 5pm.

Saturday

borgerriocollage
Bogerrio

If there is a more colourful carnival event than Borgerrio in Antwerp, then I’d love to hear about it -in the meantime this streetparty is the queen of Antwerp street parties, bringing -as it’s name suggests -a taste of the Rio carnival spirit to Borgerhout. From 13h – 18h there will be a splendid parade, music, kids activities and lots of stands offering food and goods from the various communities that live in this richly diverse part of Antwerp. For those ready to party way into the night there’s the Borgerrio Afterparty at Pekfabrik
from 11pm.

For something a little more low key there’s the ABC (Antiques, Bric-a-brac, Books, Curiosa) Market den Beulebak from 11am-5pm in the University area.

Govinda is an annual Indian festival in Antwerp (organised by the Hare Krishna movement) which takes place on Groenplaats.

Sunday

portofantwerptriathlon2019Sunday doesn’t seem like a day of rest at all this weekend. Firstly here are a couple of sporty events for you. The Antwerp Triathlon welcomes supporters at Eilandje: it will be a warm busy day as athletes take part in three events around the Eilandje and port area of the city, featuring swimming, cycling and running.

For those wanting to enjoy some outdoor exercise themselves, head to this free zumba event at Harmonie Park at 4pm. These hour-long sessions are on until 25th August.

For bargain hunters and browsers check out one or two of these  markets today: from 9am-6pm there’s a secondhand market on Dageraadplaats.

grotemarktF
Grote Markt

Brocantwerpen is on Grotemarkt from 10am -6 (this is more an antique and curiosa market)

Stulp (11am-6pm) at Costa Sint Andies (Sint Andriesplaats) is a market with an emphasis on recycling and upcycling pre-loved clothes, books, plants and other items.

It’s set to be warm and dry this weekend, with temperatures of around 21-22 degrees on Friday and Saturday, rising to 25 degrees on Sunday.

Zomerbar

It’s truly summer when Summer HQ opens in the form of the Zomerbar on Sloepenweg which is does on the 24th June (Monday) at 2pm. It’s a familiar and essential summer hangout that’s very relaxed and kid-friendly. Note: Stad Antwerp summer bars will be cashless this year.

As usual at the end of the month Stad Antwerpen museums are open for free on Wednesday

And don’t forget the Buurt Pleintjes which are on over summer and offer sporting activities and classes for very low prices. You need to register for some of these but sometimes that is not directly possible via that link: click on “meer lezen” where there will be info about registering for the activity you are interested in (eg. via email). In some cases it’s not necessary (where it says “Inschrijven is niet nodig”) and you can

Antwerp’s biggest annual funfair has opened at Park Spoor Oost: Sinksenfoor 2019  – a traditional funfair with all the rides, colour, noise and high-carb food  you could wish for! Sinksenfoor is on daily until the 7th July.

As Pride month begins, and in preparation for Antwerp Pride (August), iconic locations around the city are lit in rainbow colours this weekend! Tickets for the ticketed events on the Zomer van Antwerpen agenda are now for sale via the program page of  the ZVA website.

The OLT (Rivierenhof) has a summer music program. Info and tickets here.

For World Cup Big Screen action try the Irish Bars (An Sibhin, Molly’s, Irish Times & Kelly’s). FlyingpigFFriday

Flying Pig is on Steenplein: start your weekend with outdoor drinks and music. This is a particularly nice location for this event -right next to the River Schelde. Enjoy a bright sunset if it’s a clear evening.

Saturday

There’s Street theatre and fun in the Groenekwartier

And the second of two family days on Damplein. Take the kids along for music, performances, face-painting, free workshops and entertainment. Food, drinks and ice-creams available.

Sunday

There are three markets today for browsers and bargain-hunters:

Markt van Morgen from midday on Kloosterstraat: jewellery, stationery, clothing, MvMFinterior accessories and other creations from local, small-scale businesses and creative individuals. Smaller and more relaxed than Swan Market (see below) in my opinion, however as they are not far apart, it is possible to see both.

There’s a Rommelmarkt on Dageraadplaats (Zurenborg) which is always a fun square to hang out when the weather is good. 9am -6pm.

And Swan Market is on Grote Markt, along with the usual food and music which accompanies this busy market offering creative, fashion, jewellery and design products.

And if you prefer to buy nothing and get away from it all, head to the Rozenfeest at Rivierenhof. A must for gardeners, rose-overs or those who want to enjoy some green space.

Frederic van Strydonck got in touch this week to tell me about the short film he made “Antverpia”:  “My friend Edouard (who operated the camera) and I both grew up nearby Antwerp, but studied film-making abroad. So we never really made any films in Antwerp but always were very keen to do it. We wanted to show a side of Antwerp that doesn’t often gets featured: the diversity of ethnicities, cultures, religions, etc. We wanted to make a video that celebrates as many facets of this city as possible.”

And here is what they made.

This weekend in Antwerp: 1st, 2nd & 3rd June

quaeye werelt
De Quaeye Werelt

There are two big events going on over this weekend (and beyond). Stad Antwerpen opens its Baroque Season . Events, walks, museum exhibitions, music and perfomances will celebrate this most opulent of styles, with which this part of the world is so closely associated.  Baroque Season continues until January of next year. Kick-off events for this weekend can be found here, and a full and detailed programme can be read or downloaded here

Over Saturday and Sunday it’s De Quaeye Werelt at Sterckshof (Rivierenhof). This is an event which we always look forward to: De Quaeye Werelt takes you back to 1477: merchants, musicians, knights, and medieval folk of all types pitch their tents, sell their wares, and eat, drink and entertain for two days at Rivierenhof. The main event is the reconstruction of a medieval battle (at 3pm) which is fun, exciting and VERY noisy (take care of little ones and anyone who maybe alarmed by loud sudden noise; you might want to bring ear defenders for babies and kids). It’s an extremely friendly event with participants coming from all over Europe, and with something for everyone.

drink

Friday

Start your weekend with drinks at Aper’eau on Bolivarplaats from 5pm.

Saturday

Hair of the dog? Seefhoek Brewery are hosting four bands at Cafe Seefhoek from midday at Leven in de Brouwerij.

Enjoy Boulevard National in the Quartier Nationale today, and the Latin Murga parade at Costa: “Music, street food, art and fashion all combined in one must-attend event!” promises the Facebook page . If you do not know this part of town, today would be a great day to check it out – it is a nice area for shopping if you want to get away from the high- street brands feel of Meir.

boulevardnat

On Damplein from 2pm it’s Family Saturday. Take the kids along for music, performances, face-painting, free workshops and entertainment. Food, drinks and ice-creams available.

There are two runs taking place in Antwerp today. Good luck to all those taking part! There’s the Deurne 10 Miles and the Sint Andries run. The Deurne 10 Miles (at 19.30pm) raises money for bowel cancer, and there is a free run for kids at 6pm.

Here’s the Saturday programme for Baroque Antwerp Opening Weekend.

Sunday

First Sunday of the month means Sunday shopping in Antwerp. Shops will be open on Meir and on other shopping areas such as Nationalestraat and Kloosterstraat.

SKRAP are holding second hand markets on the Groenplaats for the next five shopping Sundays from 8am -8pm.

skrap

Here’s the Sunday programme for Baroque Antwerp Opening Weekend. Fans of street art will be especially interested in the opening of the Baroque murals. These four special works of art were commissioned for the Baroque season.

It’s going to be a warm weekend again, with the possibility of some showers on Saturday.

Tigers & Flies

It is always nice to be contacted by people who are coming to Antwerp and have scoped out Nessascityblog, so I was delighted to hear from Tigers and Flies -a UK Brighton based band, who have an accessible, jangly indie-pop sound. You can give them a listen here or catch them live at Korsakov’s on Wednesday night at 9pm (UPDATED START TIME). For free!

Beyond Nessascityblog

It’s been really great to have worked with other interesting people recently.  Here’s a round -up of some Nessascityblog collabs:

Firstly I wrote  Three Great Spots For When The Sun Is Shining which was published on the Stad Antwerpen website and optimistically describes three places in the city you might want to check out if the weather holds out …

Next I wrote this guest post  about 5 Antwerp destinations for the blog Discovering Belgium.

NonnativeblueyellowLast Monday, I was delighted to publish a guest post by Laura Soave of Nonnative – a must-read if you are new or recently arrived in Antwerp.

I also thoroughly enjoyed myself in conversation with comedian Nigel Williams  of Stand Up Antwerp. You can hear the podcast of that conversation here. It is the first of a new series of weekly podcasts that Nigel is working on called “Babbel Without A Cause” about members of the expat community in Antwerp.

I was also interviewed for The Bulletin and look forward to sharing that soon.

Anyway, this all serves of a reminder of how nice it is to work with others, so if you have an Antwerp idea for Nessascityblog that you would like to contribute, or something you would like written for your own publication, please get in touch.

This weekend: 16th, 17th & 18th June

This weekend the Zomer van Antwerp officially begins! For those who don’t know, this is a program of venues and cultural events (cinema, theatre, circus and music) which are in place until the 3rd September. Many events are free, some are ticketed or have an entry cost. The ZVA website is the go-to place online for information and tickets. The Zomerbar on Sloepenweg is one of the hubs of ZVA and it is an ideal place to hang out for everyone really, as it is a great bar and location, but also has a play area for kids and plenty of sand. There’s also food (or you can bring your own), and an outdoor library. It’s also a place where you can pick up ZVA tickets and info.

location-162102_640Here’s the MAP!

Friday

The ZVA kicks off at the Zomerfabriek at 10pm but doors -and the bar- will be open from 5pm.

Those interesting people down at MAF have a vernissage …

MAFvernissage
Saturday

At Bato Batu bar from 1.30- 6pm there’s a second hand vinyl sale in the side-street by the bar.

Screen Shot 2017-06-13 at 22.24.12

… and regular rommelmarkts in Appelstraat, Borgerhout and in Berchem from 8am, for early birds…

Screen Shot 2017-06-13 at 22.23.56

Other than that, Saturday seems a bit quiet -I would take the time to either check out one of the summer bars, or spend the day at Antwerp’s regular Saturday market on Theaterplein, which is much more than a place where you can just pick up your weekly fruit and veg: more and more stands are selling food and drinks for on the spot, and it is making the market an increasingly social place to hang out. There’s a busy cava and seafood stand in front of the theatre, but also worth a visit is a stand with a Spanish flavour, a little further along (usually almost parallel with Belgian Wines) which does decent tapas, or egg rolls for a late breakfast, which you can wash down with wine, coffee or Cava, depending on your levels of bon viveurism (or hangover).

saxophone-29816_640

The evening, however, brings the perfect event for the jazz fan: The Sint- Andries Jazz Bar Tour: five bars, all within easy walking distance of one another, each offering a menu of live jazz, starting at 8, with the last band signing off at midnight. Check the link to plan your route (the venues are all marked on the map with the sax image, left).

Sunday

swanmarket
Swan Market

Swan Market is on Grote Markt from 11am (design, accessories, clothing, food)

… and the usual strip & boekenplein (second hand books and graphic novels) is on de Coninckplein in front of Permeke Library.

There’s a rommelmarkt (second hand clothes and goods) on  Dageraadplaats from 9am. This is a very nice local square with plenty of cafés, bars and a playground so you can keep an eye on your kids while you have a drink or browse the stands.

Weather forecast: lovely.

dereede

Antwerp has a new museum – Museum de Reede which casts a spotlight on the work of Goya, Munch and Rops. It is just opposite Steenplein near the river (Ernest van Dijckkaai 7).

Please note that during July I will be away. As was the case last year, there will be a Big Fat Summer Post (pressing on the 29th June) for the time that I am not here to write weekly posts.

Summer bar Smokey Jo’s Cantina (formerly Smokey Joe’s Garage) at de Koninck  Brewery is another summer bar (also with kids play area) which is now open.

Get your tickets for BATS Variety Show  (this weekend and next weekend) I hear they are selling out fast!

If you are finding it a challenge to get around the various roadworks in Antwerp these days (especially since the Leien were closed off on the 5th June) then check slimnaarantwerpen.be to help you negotiate your way around town.

Don’t forget that the Sinksenfoor (funfair) is open daily in Park Spoor Oost until 9th July.

And the View on The Zoo ferris wheel (featured pic) is on Astridplein until August.

Buurtpleintjes is an initiative from Stad Antwerpen offering free sporting activities on local squares around the city. Last year, my son really enjoyed a series of free basketball lessons on Sint Andriesplaats as part of this initiative. Start by checking here to see what’s on offer near you.

During summer Antwerp offers two open-air swimming pools which are now open! It is free to swim at Boekenberg, but there is a small entrance charge at the Linkeroever pool (it is also recommended that you have a 1 euro coin with you to use the lockers; and your A-kaart, if you have one).

HERE’S THE MAPTASTICALLY GOOGLY GOOGLE MAP for this very weekend …

Friday

Start your weekend at Antwerp’s most striking recent architectural addition -the new Port of Antwerp ‘Haven Huis’ -with Flying Pig (drinks, music, DJs) on Zahahadidplein from 5pm until midnight.

Saturday

Bar Nord (previously Cargo Summer Bar) celebrates World Gin Day from midday until 10pm, with 30 brands, offering 60 types of gin, and DJs providing music. After party: HAVN Church, Italiëlei 8, 2000 Antwerp.

worldGinday

The Geefplein at Costa Sint Andries seems to be becoming a regular event on the second Saturday of the month, at the shelter near the Sint Andries community centre. I think ‘freecycling’ is the best translation to describe this event: bring household items which you no longer need and simply give them away. Take what you need from what others offer. Free, 11am – 6pm.

At T’ Werkhuys between 1pm and 5pm there is a Rommelmarkt (flea market), supported by the Antwerp Kringwinkels (second hand shops) featuring drinks, and also an exhibition about Ghana. Proceeds go to 11.11.11 which works with local organisations and volunteers for a fairer world. On Sint Jansplein there is also the regular rommelmarkt from 9am.

Grand Bazar Shopping centre has some treats and activities for a nostalgic old-school  Fathers Day between 1 and 5pm.

Meanwhile Scoop store on Kloosterstraat open a Live Art Weekend at 6pm, with online bidding for works at hammertime.be until 15th June. The proceeds go to Moeders voor Moeders which supports struggling families in the area with food packages, children clothing, school equipment and other essentials.

On Saturdays in June, July and August (excl. 5th & 19th Aug) Port of Antwerp offers free cycling tours of the port between 12 -5pm, covering 45km in all (but with regular stops for breaks) and starting at MAS. This is free but you need to register by clicking on ‘schrijf je in’. Make sure your bike is in good condition, and bring your own picnic in a backpack or panier.

Sunday

RoseF

Provincie Antwerpen offers ‘Rose Day’ at Rivierenhof. Gardening friends of mine gave this event a glowing review last year. See the roses grown at Rivierenhof between the Rozentuin and Kasteel Rivierenhof. Purchase roses, enjoy music and entertainment with a rosy theme; between 11am and 6pm. Free.

It’s the Silver Run today -not just a run but a social event which also includes foodtrucks, drinks, music and lots of other entertainment.

Children aged 6-13 will enjoy this Henna tattoo workshop activity at Permeke library, from 11- 1pm. Free, no need to reserve.

Patent Pending Painting by Sacha Eckes

Art lovers can get a Sunday afternoon fix at the opening of an exhibition of the work of Sacha Eckes and cartoonist, Ansu.

Markt van Morgen is on the Kloosterstraat from midday until 6 – very handy for a last minute gift or card for Father’s Day, if you need one!

After the weather nose-dived this week, the weekend is looking a bit better, with warmer temperatures (especially on Sunday where the top temp is predicted to be 25) and a low chance of showers.

Please note that during July I will be away. As was the case last year, there will be a Big Fat Summer Post (pressing on the 29th June) for the time that I am not here to write weekly posts.

Construction works on the Leien

If you are finding it a challenge to get around the various roadworks in Antwerp these days (especially since the Leien were closed off on the 5th June) then check slimnaarantwerpen.be to help you negotiate your way around town.

Don’t forget that the Sinksenfoor (funfair) is open daily in Park Spoor Oost until 9th July.

And the View on The Zoo ferris wheel is on Astridplein until August.

I’m proud to share my first guest blog post on Nessascityblog! If you missed it, have a read of Dolrish’s personal story of coming to live and work in Antwerp, all the way from the Philippines. And if you’d like to contribute and tell your story, please get in touch via nessascityblog@gmail.com

Critical Mass sets off from Theaterplein

Friday

It is the Easter edition of Critical Mass. Assemble as usual at Theaterplein at 6pm, with your bike. Enjoy a spring bike ride with other cyclists around Antwerp. Rumour has it that this edition involves chocolate.

Saturday

7000 cyclists will be taking part in a  warm-up event (We Ride Flanders) for the Tour of Flanders (see Sunday) They are going to be setting off between 7 and 8am and following the same course as the Tour

Sunday

Tour of Flanders flags on the Town Hall

The Tour of Flanders bike race starts today from Antwerp! It sets off from Het Steen at 10.30 but the festivities will be up and running from 8am on Grote Markt which will be transformed into a fan village for the day, with music, DJs and big screens to follow the action until 6pm.

It’s the first Sunday of the month, so many of the shops in the centre and the old town will be open for Sunday shopping.

Alternatively head to Parkloods (Park Spoor Noord) for Goegekregen’s rommelmarkt (secondhand with lots of retro and vintage bargains) from 9am -6pm, or to Markt van Morgen on Kloosterstraat from 12 -6pm. This market offers clothing, jewellery, accessories, stationery and household goods made by local creatives. There are usually snacks and drinks available, and it is a great place to pick up a special card or gift that you won’t find in the high street.

Or why not Tango on Draakplaats from 3 -8pm?

The weather is predicted to be warm and pleasant again, with some clouds at times; a 50% chance of a bit of rain on Saturday.

Miscellaneous

If all the biking this weekend has strengthened your resolve to cycle more, then check out Antwerp’s City Bike Scheme (Velo). And don’t forget kids: kids love to cycle but children’s bikes can be pricey. Apen op Wieltjes enables you to pay a one-off annual fee and then borrow bikes for your kid(s), returning them when they have grown out of them. They also offer workshops in bike maintenance and other activities. If you have a kid’s bike knocking around in your cellar or garage, you might want to donate it to this scheme, whose aim is to to ensure that every child in Antwerp gets to have a bike.

Random rec: Cafe de Kat (Wolstraat 22) an established, attractive ‘bruine kroeg’ in the old town, which I found myself in recently. It doesn’t look special from the outside but inside it’s roomy, fairly noisy and with a lovely, authentic interior.

funfairstjanspleinF

There’s still a small funfair on St Jansplein until 9th April.

This Weekend: June 17th, 18th & 19th

Friday

Bar Gloed is on the 4th floor

For after-work drinks, many of the summer bars are now open including  CargoBocaderoThe Next LevelBar PaniekSmokey Joes Garage (previously Bar Josephine) Bar Gloed on the Keyserlei (Antwerp Tower) and Zomer Fabriek. A couple more will open their doors toward the end of the month.

Saturday

On the Grote Markt, MUHKA will be holding Acid Brass, presented by Jeremy Deller and the Festival Brass Band, 1.30- 3pm. In the event of bad weather this will be held on Theater Plein. It’s bass band music with a difference -I saw this once in Glasgow, many moons ago, and it was thoroughly entertaining to hear tracks like ‘What Time is Love?’ and ‘Voodoo Ray’ rendered by a full-on brass band. This is part of a MUHKA Exhibition on rave culture.

UEFA

UEFA: The Belgium -Ireland game is going to be the big match of the day. I have mentioned already some venues which are showing the games on big screens (Plein Publiek, Cargo, Dageraadplaats and Chatleroi). This one will also be showing on Groenplaats -kick-off is at 3pm. Alternatively it’s sure to be very lively in the Irish bars in town (An Sibhin, Kelly’s and The Irish Times) for this one …

YogaDay
International Day of Yoga 2015 attracted over 1000 participants.

The International Day of Yoga  (copyright image courtesy of AWDC) in Antwerp is a wee bit further out than most events I include but I am putting it in because it is a must for those who practice yoga. It’s a big event and it is totally free. Don’t forget to register if you would like to attend. The event is suitable for those aged 12+. The host of the event (Reetu Mehta) will also be teaching ‘Mudras’ this year (hand gestures, used in conjunction with breathing techniques and chanting).

Goegekregen fleamarket from 10am -6pm on the Kattendijkdok and Swan Market will be on Grote Markt again from midday until 6pm. Right near central station there is a second hand clothing sale on Van Leriusstraat starting at 10am.

It’s the third Sunday of the month, so there is the book and magazine fair in front of Permeke Library on De Coninckplein from 10am -4pm. Meanwhile, inside the library itself between 11-12 in the auditorium there is a read-aloud for kids aged 4-8, with a dinosaur theme.

Middleheimparkstatues
Middelheim Museum

Here is a unique type of tour of Middelheim Sculpture Museum: this tour is specifically designed for those with mild to moderate dementia (and their caregivers). It is free and you do not need to reserve. It is in Dutch. If you think you know someone who might benefit from this, do watch the film on the page, which is subtitled in English, and explains the purpose and style of the tour.

The weather is predicted to be mild/ warm, with light showers on Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks like being cloudy, but dry. (image: Pixabay)

Here’s the Google map showing all the locations for the events mentioned here.

Zomer van Antwerpen has officially started (even if the weather isn’t quite on board …yet) On this page you can find two .pdfs with info in English about events.

It’s the last chance to get to Sinksenfoor (funfair) at Spoor Oost this weekend.

Here’s a complete guide to all the big- screen venues for watching UEFA in and around Antwerp.

A shout out to the Antwerp International School whose school year finishes this week. Lots of love -and safe travels -to staff and students who will be heading to family and friends around the world over summer. And a special mention to wish all the best for those students who will receive IB and IGCSE exam results soon … especially the students from IB English B 😉
