This weekend in Antwerp: 22nd, 23rd & 24th June

Here’s the map!

Screen Shot 2018-06-20 at 19.31.34Good times! It’s Bier Passie Weekend over the whole weekend on Groenplaats. Bier Passie opens on Friday at 5. The opening hours for Saturday 1pm -midnight; and for Sunday – 11am -8pm. Sample many different beers by buying and picking up a glass and your jetons (2 euros each) before you make your way around the selection of 200+ different beers.

Over both days in the Klapdor- Paardemarkt- Falconplein -Varkensmarkt area it’s Ramblas Antwerpen rest assured this event is ON, despite confusion caused by an online announcement that Ramblas 2017 would be the last one. I am assured that this one will be a great edition of this busy neighbourhood street party, and many streets in the area will be car-free, to make way for the live performances, kids’ activities and food & drink.

Friday

Atlas  is an organisation which helps newcomers and non-natives to feel at home in Antwerp. They can help you integrate, understand Belgian culture, access services and find out where to learn Dutch.

atlasophetplein_websitebeeld_RGB

Atlas op het Plein is an event on Theaterplein which showcases their work, and the theme of making connections in the community. The idea is to go along, meet people of different cultures while additionally enjoying something very Belgian: frietjes! (fries). There will also be drinks, kids’ entertainment (baking fortune cookies together; children’s theatre on a bus; face painting and henna (NL: ‘Kindergrime en henna-tattoo’); arts & crafts (NL: ‘tekenen en knutselen’); Rollerdisco for kids 8+). There will be DJs & music until 10pm.

Beerlovers Bar on de Coninckplein is a bar which I really like and this weekend it celebrates its second birthday. Enjoy an extra 8 beers on draught on Friday night, and/ or come along for further festivities (and World Cup football) from 13.30pm on Saturday. Beerlovers is definitely an Antwerp bar worth knowing about.

Saturday

borgerriocollageBorgerrio takes over the Turnhoutsebaan today! Streets will be cordoned off to keep this event traffic free and things will be busy from 11am at the heart of this most multi-cultural of neighbourhoods. The highlight is the hugely colourful parade which takes place from 3.30pm, but there’s also food, music, local selling & info stands, plus a special program of kids activities to enjoy all day. This year is the added bonus of the Belgium -Tunisia World Cup game showing in the evening. Borgerrio is free, and festivities continue until 8pm.

Sunday

Lambermontmartre

It’s Lambermontmartre, down by KMSKA. This monthly art market showcases and offers for sale the work of local artists, painters and photographers. There’s a Ricard bar, as well as other drinks and snacks. There’s also always live music (2.30pm and 5pm) and a relaxed atmosphere: just right for a Sunday afternoon.

Port of Antwerp are holding a picnic in the harbour – register via the link for a family event with a varied menu (including fruit, sandwiches, chocolate, salads, cookies, coffee)  for just 5 euros pp. Half of the money raised will go to Mercy Ships: a hospital boat which provides treatment and care to people in sub-saharan African nations (including children) who cannot afford it.

This weekend: 2nd, 3rd & 4th September

Harumph …  there seems to be a lot of closing events, which compel us to acknowledge that summer is drawing to a close. But fear not! There is a lot going on to console Antwerp residents, and weekend visitors too…

The city marks the 1944 Liberation of Antwerp this weekend with a programme of commemoration starting with a dance (see Friday, below)

The weather is likely to stay warm (23- 24 degrees; a little cooler on Saturday) but it will be cloudy some of the time. There’s a likelihood of showers on Sunday, around late morning/ lunch time.

And a special mention to the BATS choir who will be singing at the Tank Ceremony (at the Cromwell Tank at 9.30am on the Jan Van Rijswijcklaan, near the Expo) as the liberation weekend concludes, in commemoration of the Liberation of Antwerp and organised by The Royal British Legion.

This weekend: 1st, 2nd & 3rd July

Friday

If you’ve wandered through Sint Jansplein recently you will have noticed the building of a large wooden construction. This is the work of Timecircus -the artists’ collective, resident at Permeke Library. It’s called Labrint and will be opening on Friday at 2pm.

labrintF
Labrint

Friday will be a big day if you are Red Devils fan: Belgium play Wales so here’s a reminder of places round town you might like to go share the excitement by watching the game on a big screen: Spoor OostCargo Summer BarPlein PubliekDageraadplaats and Gedempte Zuiderdokken.

Drama queens & kings, NB: BATS won’t be having their monthly opening evening this month. The next one is in September.

And the mother of all Antwerp summer bars, courtesy of Zomer van Antwerpen, is now open on Sloepenweg. Best way to get there is by bike, cycling along the river in a northerly direction -you can’t miss it. It’s a lovely spacious venue, with a reading area and plenty of sand and playground space for kids.

The Open Air Theater in Rivierenhof has now begin its summer program. You can find tickets for paying events on its website, but there are some free events too such as this one for younger audiences at 1, and a free world music concert at 8pm.

Saturday

On the Grote Markt, MUHKA will be holding Acid Brass, presented by Jeremy Deller and the Festival Brass Band, 1.30- 3pm. In the event of bad weather this will be held on Theater Plein. It’s bass band music with a difference -I saw this once in Glasgow, many moons ago, and it was thoroughly entertaining to hear tracks like ‘What Time is Love?’ and ‘Voodoo Ray’ rendered by a full-on brass band. This is part of a MUHKA Exhibition on rave culture.

UEFA

UEFA: The Belgium -Ireland game is going to be the big match of the day. I have mentioned already some venues which are showing the games on big screens (Plein Publiek, Cargo, Dageraadplaats and Chatleroi). This one will also be showing on Groenplaats -kick-off is at 3pm. Alternatively it’s sure to be very lively in the Irish bars in town (An Sibhin, Kelly’s and The Irish Times) for this one …

YogaDay
International Day of Yoga 2015 attracted over 1000 participants.

The International Day of Yoga  (copyright image courtesy of AWDC) in Antwerp is a wee bit further out than most events I include but I am putting it in because it is a must for those who practice yoga. It’s a big event and it is totally free. Don’t forget to register if you would like to attend. The event is suitable for those aged 12+. The host of the event (Reetu Mehta) will also be teaching ‘Mudras’ this year (hand gestures, used in conjunction with breathing techniques and chanting).

Here is a unique type of tour of Middelheim Sculpture Museum: this tour is specifically designed for those with mild to moderate dementia (and their caregivers). It is free and you do not need to reserve. It is in Dutch. If you think you know someone who might benefit from this, do watch the film on the page, which is subtitled in English, and explains the purpose and style of the tour.

Sint Annatunnel

Here’s a market on every Sunday (9-5pm) that you may not be aware of: it’s an antiques and bric-a-brac market on Sint Jansvliet (that’s the square by the Sint Annatunnel).

The weather is looking pretty nice, with warmish temperatures and Friday set to be dry. It will be cooler and more changeable (possible light showers) on Saturday and Sunday.

Miscellaneous

Check the Google Map for all locations mentioned in this post, if you need directions.

Sinksenfoor continues at Spoor Oost.

Monday at 7pm is the first Belgium game (v. Italy) of UEFA. Unsurprisingly, this is a big deal and there will be big screen on Grote Markt for this game.

Park Brug will be installed this weekend. This is a footbridge going over the Leien on to Park Spoor Noord.  It won’t be open for pedestrians to use for about a month though, while the final tests are conducted.

The View on the Zoo (big wheel) is on Astridplein until the end of August. From the top you can see the centre of town and also the works and reservations presently taking place in the zoo itself.

Pictures of a couple of last weekend’s events (De Quaeye Werelt at Rivierenhof and Brasspartij at Sint Andriesplaats) are now on the Nessascityblog Instagram page along with a couple of snaps I took during the week drom on the wheel, at The University of Antwerp and at the beautiful Nottebohm Room at the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library (not specifically related to Antwerp, but for foodies, there is also the odd bit of vegetarian cooking, so the instagram page is also very much for you if you like looking at lasagne …).

It being the last Friday of the month, Critical Mass bike ride takes place as usual -assemble with your bike -also at Theaterplein (6pm)

A special mention to my Grade 12 IB students who are graduating from Antwerp International School. I am missing you already!

Also a special mention for BATS whose 50s themed variety show opens tonight at their Little Theater on Paardenmarkt -with performances also on Sunday and Monday.

At 2pm at Kleine Hedonist there is a presentation and concert for this underground record release.

Saturday sees the arrival of a new market in Antwerp: an  Evening Market on the Vlaamsekaai (near the playground), starting at 3pm and continuing until 9pm, promising 100+ stands offering food, jewelry, leather goods & snacks.

On the same day, at the same location, is a second hand children’s toy market.

Kellysdoor
Kelly’s on Keyserlei

At 4pm, footie fans might want to catch the Belgium -Switzerland friendly. This will be showing on the big screens at An Sibhin and Plein Publiek. It will also be showing at Kelly’s on Keyserlei and at  The Irish Times, who will additionally be screening Real Madrid v Athletico Madrid later on (as will An Sibhin, offering pitchers of Stella or Jupiler for just 8€ during the game). When UEFA 2016 starts in June, Cargo Summer Bar will be showing all games on the big screen there. Take your pick.

Antwerp Stadspark

In the Stadspark, Klein Antwerpen will be holding walks, storytelling and a chance to try some Taiko (Japanese drumming) from midday -bring your picnic! I couldn’t see exactly where in the park they will be starting, but they usually meet at the large statue on the corner at Belgielei/ Van Eycklei.

Sunday

Den Hopsack is a small, friendly and diverse music bar in the old town -just a little off the beaten track (off Sint Jansvliet). On Sunday they are having a jam of traditional Irish music starting at 3pm. This is a monthly session, and is free.

SKETCHlmontmartre
SKETCH at Lambermontmatre

Lambermontmartre opens this weekend! This is a really nice monthly art market which takes place on the last Sunday of each month throughout summer, enabling local artists to sell their work, but also offering great snacks, a small bar and music. As well as checking out the art work on sale, you can take part by creating some art of your own, courtesy of SKETCH, and there is a space for children to paint too. You can find Lambermontmarte in the square directly in front of the Fine Art Museum from midday. Music from gypsy swing band Croque Manouche.

It’s also the last chance to catch this exhibition on the Mechelsesteenweg.

clouds-1293230_640Temperatures are going to be good this weekend (21 +) but with a chance of showers (some stormy) throughout the weekend. Enjoy the warm weather, but bring a brolly, just in case! (image: Pixabay)
