Special post: Fine Wine Junkies -An Antwerp Start-Up

By Bart Meeus, founder of Fine Wine Junkies

If you love Antwerp and you love wine, then we have good news for you!

At the end of last year I launched a new wine concept called “Fine Wine Junkies” which could become a new standard for how to consume and experience wine in the Antwerp region.

Fine Wine Junkies is a start-up which saw the light after I experienced that acquiring the right wine at the right moment was not always easy. As a matter of fact, the lack of services enabling enjoyment of a fine wine, stylishly presented and brought to your home (or other location) at the right temperature, made it clear that there was a gap to fill in Antwerp: bringing fine wine to fine people’s homes!

finewinebagsFine Wine Junkies aims to stand out by offering clients a wine list which is far from what they may have previously experienced: no big classic vineyards or big names; a very limited French range of wines; a focus on new world wine countries and last -but not least – competitive pricing form the core values of FineWineJunkies. The wines offered originate from countries like Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand and of course Belgium. Belgians -due to their modesty- often overlook the fact that that we ourselves can and do make great wines, right here in Belgium .

genoelselderen
Genoels-Elderen

Fine Wine Junkies is above all an Antwerp brand, but also a proud Belgian company, and thus offers some of these fine Belgian wines. At this moment we partner with Genoels -Elderen, one of the better-known wineries here in Belgium. We offer their complete range of white, red and bubbles. But there will be more: as we speak, we are working out new partnerships with a range of smaller and less well- known wineries in Belgium. We expect to offer some very exclusive and difficult-to-obtain Belgian wines in the near future. As the seasons change throughout the year, so the menu will also change in order to offer wines appropriate to each season.

The next question is: how do we bring fine wine to fine people’s home?

Fine Wine Junkies is available via both UberEats and Deliveroo, and customers will have their fine selection delivered to their door in under thirty minutes.

Alongside the direct-delivery service,  Fine Wine Junkies runs a regular webshop: www.finewinejunkies.com, where larger quantities can be ordered and delivered within three days.

In 2019 Fine Wine Junkies will further explore B2B concepts on which we are presently working. Those new concepts will offer a diverse range of services perfectly fitted for B2B purposes to companies.

Broadening our market with direct-delivery, regular e-commerce activities, B2B concepts and even a wine tasting bar, should mean that Fine Wine Junkies becomes a byword for fine wine in Antwerp.

Starting up in Antwerp?

Well, naturally, you will need an idea: a product, a service or a combination of both; a financial plan to cover the start-up phase; a marketing plan (most probably based on market research you did) and a commercial plan regarding how to sell your products or services to your clients.

Cities like Antwerp are happy with people who want to translate their creative ideas into businesses. It’s good for the image and the well-being of the city. If you are interested, begin your start-up journey at Ondernemen in Antwerpen.

This weekend in Antwerp: 6th, 7th & 8th July

If you live in or close to the centre, you don’t need to go far for a full weekend of entertainment this weekend. Feesten in het Stadspark is a free event in the Stadspark over both days. There’s food, drink, kids entertainment, live music, performances and dancing to be had. On Sunday, things kick off quite early with a big second hand market from Goegekregen (from 9am).

The hot weather is going to continue, so there is nothing to spoil your fun at this event: as ever don’t forget water-bottles, sun hats, shades and plenty of sunscreen for the whole family, especially kids.

Here is your GOOGLE MAP for this weekend!

There’s a huge second hand market on Sint Jansplein from 10am -6pm.

Sunday

Hungry? head to Brilliant Foodies at Felix Pakhuis (this is near MAAS museum, Eilandje). Felix Pakhuis is a beautiful venue for this free multicultural food event. In addition to the amazing food, there will be live music, diamond and jewelry workshops and fun activities for the whole family. Brilliant Foodies is hosted by Diamonds and Antwerp.

Another really nice part of the Zomer van Antwerpen is the “Muziek in de Wijk” events, which bring local bands to the local squares and parks of the city. This weekend on Sunday Muziek in de Wijk is on Krugerplein from 2.30pm with the main program beginning at 4pm.

Miscellaneous

On Wednesday 11th July Vlaanderen Feest will be held on Grote Markt with a busy party program that starts at midday. This is a fun local event, and definitely one to enjoy if you are recently arrived and want to enjoy an authentic part of Antwerp cultural life. You can read about why this is celebrated as an important day for Flanders here.

Have you noticed the life-sized statues of zoo animals (pic right) around the town? These commemorate 175 years of Antwerp Zoo. Happy birthday, Antwerp Zoo!

Also from the zoo: every evening on the Flamingo Plein  (zoo entrance) live music and -yes, you guessed it – a summer bar, between 5pm -7.30pm. A perfect summer after-work for when you step off the train -until 23rd September.

Friday

Hungry? Picnic on Theaterplein between midday and 2pm. Organised by Broederlijke Delen and Oxfam Wereldwinkels, bring your own food and don’t waste what you have: the purpose is to raise awareness of food waste.

Antwerp locals will be familiar with Aper’eau, providers of alfresco summer drinks, music and food. On Friday from 5pm they begin their season with the summer kick-off event on Grote Markt

Saturday

internationalday 2

Shout out to our favourite international school, who hold their unmissable International Day event just once every two years, making it extra special (particularly as this year is the 50th anniversary of the school). Experience the countries and cultures that make up this diverse learning community of young people, families and staff, as they showcase food, activities, performances and music from around the world, from 10am -5pm on the school’s campus in Ekeren.

It’s Dag van de Gever in Antwerp’s second-hand stores, so a good time to make space and take down unwanted goods which are in good condition to one of the “Kringloopwinkels” in the city. Get a free potplant, and the chance to win a weekend away. There are 8 shops in the Antwerp area: Abdijstraat 104, 2020 Antwerpen-Kiel; Bredabaan 397, 2170 Merksem; Kapelsestraat 237, 2950 Kapellen; Kroonstraat 166, 2140 Borgerhout; Sint-Jorispoort 29, 2000 Antwerpen; Venstraat 153 b, 2900 Schoten; Vosstraat 305, 2100 Deurne and Bredabaan 651, 2930 Brasschaat

A choice of street parties back in town: it’s the Marnix Feest (pic below left) on Marnixplaats from 2pm, where there will be a street party, complete with kids’ entertainment, music, food and drinks until 10pm or the Twintig Achtien free festival (pic below right, courtesy of Twintig Achtien) along the Konijnenwei from 13.30.

Sunday

It’s the first Sunday of the month, so … Sunday shopping in and around the city centre.

Go and discover creative Berchem at the Made In Berchem and learn why it is becoming a hotspot for innovative and artistic ventures taking place in these locations around the district. Map and brochure to download here.

It’s the annual PVDA Divercity Festival at Park Spoor Noord from 2pm -8pm. Music, food and a footie tournament. Also in Park Spoor Noord it’s the Pink Ladies Games.

Open Werven Dag opens up construction and development sites in and around Antwerp to the public. This is more interesting than it might sound (if you are someone who is often frustrated by the amount of construction which seems to take place around the city, you might feel averse to visiting an actual construction site). Last year, we went on a cool below-ground tour of the Noorderlijn works. This year, I’m thinking of seeing this building.

Goegekregen are holding a Vinyl Sale at HAAR from 10am -5pm and Swan Market are on Grote Markt from 11 -6pm.

It’s to be a weekend of sunshine, with increasingly warmer temperatures – getting up to 23 degrees on Sunday!

Battle re-enactment

NEXT POST: 8TH JUNE

I am away this weekend and the thing I am most sorry to miss is De Quaeye Werelt, which is on the Saturday and Sunday from 10 – 6pm. As a family, we go to this every year. It is a re-enactment event and the year is 1477 and Sterckshof (Rivierenhof) is transformed into a Medieval Village for the weekend. It’s great to see the re-enactors in character roles and wearing their medieval costumes. There are also all sorts of stall and stands selling olde worlde food, drink, clothing and accessories. There is even a medieval apothecary. For kids, there is a puppet theatre and usually some beheading, as well as the space of Sterckshof to run around and enjoy. There is also music. One of the main attractions is a battle re-enactment that takes place at 3pm. This is very noisy and action packed. You may wish to bring ear-defenders for youngsters. It is free, and the food and drink are reasonably priced, but it’s also fine to take a picnic of your own. I totally recommend this event!

Barrio Cantina

Also over the whole weekend is  Barrio Cantina Food Truck Festival on Steenplein, from midday on the 3rd, 4th & 5th.

HERE’S THE MAP!

Friday

BATS hold their regular Open Evening from around 8.30pm. This seems like a good opportunity to also plug their 60th Variety Show  at The Little Theatre, which will be a ‘Best of …’

BATSvarieyshow2017
The BATS Variety Show: June 17th-19th, and 24th-26th

Head to the Harmoniepark for their neighbourhood party: dancing, music, DJs cocktails from 6pm…. to reserve for the BBQ go to www.harmoniewijk.be

Saturday

Dedicated followers of fashion may wish to see the Royal Academy of Fine Arts fashion students’ Graduation Show at the Paardenmarkt Campus.  Tickets are 10 and 5 euros.

Indiafestival

The biggest fleamarket this weekend can be found on Sint Jansplein from 10 am, while on Groenplaats there’s an Indian festival from 1pm. Find out more here.

Thrill seekers! Antwerp’s annual funfair –Sinksenfoor -opens at Spoor Oost. The Grand Opening starts at 2pm. Sinksenfoor will be there until the 9th July.

… For something a bit different – catch a brass band or two at Veemarkt from 2pm …

Sunday

First Sunday of the month means Sunday shopping and it would be a good idea to combine this with Boulevard National which takes place round the Nationalestraat and the Kammenstraat. Shops will be open but there will also be stands, food, tastings and music between midday and 6pm. Alternatively, stop for a pint and a great sandwich at one of my favourite Antwerp bars – An Sibhin.

Go dancing under a bridge at Draakplaats at 3pm, or enjoy bands for free at Borgerhout Bougeert from 4pm.

Register for The Sint Andries run in the area on the same day, or check out Ieder Zenne Meug design market on Bogaard Plein if you are not feeling quite that energetic.

Temperatures are going to be pleasant this weekend, but cooling off to the early 20s after Friday, which will be pretty hot at 26 degrees. Friday afternoon could also see some storms, and there is the possibility of light rain on Saturday at around lunch time. Sunday will be the coolest day, but should be dry all day

Miscellaneous

Please note that during July I will be away. As was the case last year, there will be a Big Fat Summer Post (pressing on the 29th June) for the time that I am not here to write weekly posts.

Monday is a public holiday (Pentecost) and there will be a Goegekregen fleamarket on Theaterplein, from 9am -6pm.

Buurtpleintjes is an initiative from Stad Antwerpen offering free sporting activities on local squares around the city. Last year my son really enjoyed a series of free basketball lessons on Sint Andriesplaats as part of this initiative. Start by checking here to see what’s on offer near you.

During summer Antwerp offers two open-air swimming pools which are now open! It is free to swim at Boekenberg, but there is a small entrance charge at the Linkeroever pool (it is also recommended that you have a 1 euro coin with you to use the lockers; and your A-kaart, if you have one).

Runners -here’s a run with a difference: Silver Run takes you up and down tower blocks, on the 11th June, for which you can register now. It does cost to take part, unless you live in social housing, in which case it is free.

I’m proud to share my first guest blog post on Nessascityblog! If you missed it, have a read of Dolrish’s personal story of coming to live and work in Antwerp, all the way from the Philippines. And if you’d like to contribute and tell your story, please get in touch via nessascityblog@gmail.com

This weekend: 9th, 10th & 11th December

xmaslightskeyserlei
Lights on Keyserlei

I don’t do Elf-on-the-Shelf, and I couldn’t care less about the arrival of a certain soft-drink laden truck: for me it starts to feel like Christmas when Antwerp’s Christmas Market opens and Winter In A begins, which is does -this very weekend (on Saturday). Huzzah! (Also, if there are Belgian and/ or Dutch influences in your family, you don’t start to ‘do’ Christmas until The Good Sint has embarked on his return journey back to Spain).

Here’s the GOOGLE MAP for this weekend.

Friday

If you can’t wait until Saturday, Flying Pig will be holding a winter edition of an event you might have become familiar with during summer (outdoor drinks, snacks and music). This will take place at Napoleonkaai, starting at 5pm -that’s right by MAS.

Also on Friday, Aspen Bocadero Winter Bar (Waagnatie) opens its doors at 6pm. It has a variety of events taking place over the winter season, until mid January.

Saturday

Christmas on Grote Markt (2015)

So the Antwerp City winter festivities will kick off at 5pm. If you are not familiar with the Stad Antwerp winter offering -head down to the old town and you can’t miss it. The Christmas market can be found around Steenplein, Suikerrui and Grotemarkt, with gluhwein and hot chocolate aplenty. There’s skating on Groenplaats, a tubing slide on Steenplein and the ferris wheel by the Schelde. The atmosphere is friendly and festive, and it’s a great place to take visiting friends or family, and kids. The Nello & Patrache (A Dog of Flanders) statue will be unveiled at the Cathedral at 7pm, when there will also be a video projection on the Cathedral. Winter In Antwerp continues until the 8th January 2017.

Markt van Morgen on Lombardenvest

Not far away, Markt van Morgen will also be having a double Christmas edition (on both days) of their usual fare of jewellery, design, accessories, stationery and clothing -made by local creatives and small businesses, providing the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts that you won’t find in high street stores. Find MvM on Lombardenvest on Saturday, from 10-6pm

Fans and photographers interested in nature and wildlife photography will enjoy The Lowland Photo Festival at Kinepolis Event Centre. This opens on Saturday, and is also on on Sunday.  There is a program of talks which is paying, but it is free to see the photography which forms the wider exhibition, with a 2 euro entance cost for the Lowland exhibition. Download the info flyer HERE.

Sunday

Markt van Morgen  is on Kloosterstraat today, from midday until 6pm.

For a Victorian Christmas experience why not join the Victorian Christmas Walk, Antwerp? Assemble in your Victorian or Edwardian outfit at 1pm on Astridplein for a walk down to the Old Town and the Christmas Market.

Shops in the city centre will be opening today and next Sunday too, for Christmas shopping.

The weather is forecast to be dry, and not too horribly cold either -possibly going up to 9 degrees on Sunday.

If you are looking ahead to the winter season and have kids to entertain, I recommend that you book Antwerp’s only traditional, old -school panto in English, for January in the Arendberg Theatre, by BATS theatre group. Another recommended from me -this time it’s Jack and the Beanstalk. (image courstesy of BARS Antwerp)
