This weekend in Antwerp: 20th & 21st January

Here’s the GOOGLE MAP for this weekend!

Saturday

tulips

It’s National Tulip Day –really. It marks the beginning of the tulip season, and while this might be more of a big deal for our friends in the Netherlands, it will be marked here in Antwerp too, with a tulip garden on Astridplein where you may pick one bunch of tulips for free, between 1pm -4.30pm

It’s the annual Children’s Ball at Opera Vlaanderen (Frankrijklei 3) at 11pm. Tickets are 8 euros via the link

At Het Roze Huis it’s the regular free film night. Tonight showing the 1990 Madonna movie-  Strike a Pose at 8pm.

Or head for the Little Theatre on Paardenmarkt for an evening of fun impro theatre (in English) courtesy of Swaajp at 8pm. Tickets are 9 euros (a mere 6 for students) and this week the special guest is Hila di Castro, from Israel.

Sunday

Permeke Library and Café

Two events at Permeke library today: the first is the regular “boekenplein” (second hand books, graphic novels, magazines and more) which takes place on the third Sunday of every month on de Coninckplein from 10am -4pm) and the second is a read-aloud hour for kids aged 4-8 at 11am (Dutch). Both are free. I also really like the cafe at Permeke (that’s the glassy green cube by the library entrance).

If  your finances are looking a bit on the thin side after the festive season, you will be pleased to know it’s the first Goegekregen/ SNITT second hand market (‘rommelmarkt’ in Dutch) this year -at the Park Loods from 9am -6pm. Free.

And here’s a children’s opera-based show which caught my eye. There are two performances on Sunday (at 3pm and 5pm), for kids aged 8+ and tickets cost 8 euros (via the link).

Wrap up, Antwerplings! It’s been a chilly week and not going to be a warm weekend, and alas, both Saturday and Sunday are likely to be showery.

Miscellaneous

One week to go until BATS panto …. the last remaining tickets can be purchased here.

This Weekend: 10th, 11th & 12th June

Friday

Flying Pig

There’s a couple of possibilities for Friday night out. The first is Flying Pig food, drink  and music event on Steenplein from 5pm. (pic: Flying Pig logo)

Football fans will be well aware that UEFA 2016 kicks off this weekend. I have mentioned a few places where games will be showing on big screens around Antwerp (Cargo Summer Bar and Plein Publiek). But Spoor Oost will be showing all the matches there too, as will Chatleroi down by the Fine Art Museum (KMSKA). Friday night is France- Romania at 9pm.

Saturday

Kieldrechtsluis
Kieldrecht Lock

Today and Sunday the public will be able to take part in the opening festivities of the Kieldrecht Lock (Kieldrechtsluis). The official opening of this huge waterway takes place on Friday, with King Filip doing the honours. Construction began in 2011 and a giant ferris wheel (enabling impressive views of the lock) will be the centrepiece of its inauguration festivities. (Image courtesy of Port of Antwerp).

stjansplein
Sint Jansplein

There’s a big Rommelmarkt (second hand market) on Sint Jansplein all day, 9am -5pm

In Antwerp Tower on the 22nd floor there is an exhibition of art from 40 local artists who are presently following part-time courses at Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts . Catch 22 takes place on both Saturday and Sunday from 2 -5.30pm and includes paintings, installations, performances, projections, photography and sculpture.

Sunday

There is another flea market on Dageraadplaats in Zurenborg, starting at 9am.

Markt van Morgen

Markt van Morgen is back on the Kloosterstraat again, with jewelry, art and accessories made by local creatives, as well as food and snacks to enjoy, between midday and 6pm. DJs add to a relaxed, neighbourhood atmosphere.

Extra City is currently running an exhibition entitled Riddle of the Burial Grounds and are offering a free tour at 2pm. If you would like to go, register via email: inschrijvingen@extracity.org

Flower and garden enthusiasts should head to Rivierenhof for the Rose Festival from 11am. There will also be a wool demonstration/ activity at the children’s farm (image: Pixabay).

For something a bit different, why not check out this artistic performance involving a large block of ice and a chainsaw at Artelli Gallery between 3 -6pm? It’s the finissage of an exhibition by Alexandre Nicolas.

Sintannatunnel
Sint Annatunnel

Here’s a market on every Sunday (9-5pm) that you may not be aware of: it’s an antiques and bric-a-brac market on Sint Jansvliet (that’s the square by the Sint Annatunnel).

The weather is looking pretty nice, with warmish temperatures and Friday set to be dry. It will be cooler and more changeable (possible light showers) on Saturday and Sunday.

Miscellaneous

Check the Google Map for all locations mentioned in this post, if you need directions.

Sinksenfoor continues at Spoor Oost.

Monday at 7pm is the first Belgium game (v. Italy) of UEFA. Unsurprisingly, this is a big deal and there will be big screen on Grote Markt for this game.

Park Brug will be installed this weekend. This is a footbridge going over the Leien on to Park Spoor Noord.  It won’t be open for pedestrians to use for about a month though, while the final tests are conducted.

zooview
view of the Savannah construction, from the wheel.

The View on the Zoo (big wheel) is on Astridplein until the end of August. From the top you can see the centre of town and also the works and reservations presently taking place in the zoo itself.

Pictures of a couple of last weekend’s events (De Quaeye Werelt at Rivierenhof and Brasspartij at Sint Andriesplaats) are now on the Nessascityblog Instagram page along with a couple of snaps I took during the week drom on the wheel, at The University of Antwerp and at the beautiful Nottebohm Room at the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library (not specifically related to Antwerp, but for foodies, there is also the odd bit of vegetarian cooking, so the instagram page is also very much for you if you like looking at lasagne …).
