This weekend: 12th, 13th & 14th May

Here’s the GOOGLE MAP for this weekend!

Driesvnoten
Dries van Noten, Nationalestraat

Belmodo Fashion Days  (overstock sales) continue, finishing up this weekend on Sunday, offering the chance to get designer items from big names like Dries Van Noten, A.F. Vandevorst, Ann Demeulemeester, and Stephan Schneider among others. Belmodo sales also to be found on the first floor of Mercado on Groenplaats from 12- 6pm (not Sunday). There’s a map of participating outlets, or download the app.

Antwerpen Vertelt is a festival of story telling (Dutch) which takes place every two years. De Roma, Permeke Library and The Red Star Line Museum are the key venues for events. You can see the full agenda here

Friday

BocaderoF2
Bocadero, Waagnatie

Another summer bar opening! This time it’s the Beach bar-style Bocadero at Waagnatie, down by the Schelde which opens at 5pm for the summer (until September)

Saturday

During the day, from midday, it’s the Damse Feesten, a very child-friendly, free, local street party, comprising of races (bikes, scooters … even a unicyclist took part last year) for people of all ages, kids entertainment and a fleamarket.

The Eurovision Song Contest is of course the highlight of any right thinking person’s musical year, so embiggen your hair and make sure your contouring is on point:  Café Den Draak will be holding a Eurovision Night and showing the contest on the big screen.

Sunday

There’s a big fleamarket on Dageraadplaats from 9am. A good opportunity to go and discover this attractive local square if you don’t already know it. It’s a good place to hang out when the weather is warm and dry, with numerous café terraces, a playground for the kids, and space for them to play basketball or football.

sintannatunnel2
Sint Anna Tunnel

If you ventured over to Linkeroever for the Left Festival (which was excellent) as mentioned in last week’s post, you might be interested in returning for an evening market on Frederik van Eedenplein from 3pm. Frederik van Eedenplein is immediately on the right when you come out of the Sint Anna Tunnel.

Another summer bar (and restaurant)  Banningville opens at 2pm. I think this is a newcomer to the Antwerp summer bar scene this year, as I have only recently heard of it.

… And don’t forget that it is Mother’s Day in Belgium today. Need a last minute gift? Try Markt van Morgen on Kloosterstraat from midday …

The weather this weekend is looking a bit patchy. Temperatures are decent (18-19 degrees, tops) but there is very likely to be rain on Friday, and possibly on Saturday too. Sunday should be dry, but cloudy at times.

This Weekend: 23rd, 24th & 25th September

If you enjoyed the skaters in Central Station at the start of the month, you will be keen to check out the Antwerp City Drops agenda for this weekend -urban sports events will be taking place at various locations around the city, including a skate contest for which you need to register by email.

It’s the opening of the Havenhuis at the port. You can’t have missed the appearance on the Antwerp skyline of this amazing prestige piece of architecture, designed by Zaha Hadid, above the old fire station. Events to mark its public opening on both days this weekend.

If you’ve been to Hand Gemaakt markets at KAVKA and other locations around Antwerp, you might want to head to their new creative pop-up this weekend at Oever 21 -open from 10.30 -6 on Friday and Saturday, and 12-6 on Sunday.

And over both days Antwerp artists are opening their workspaces around the city for Open Ateliers 2016. I’m by no means familiar with all the ateliers, but this summer I visited the MAF atelier (Steegsken 6) and can recommend that one if you are after something completely different …

MAF

Saturday

There’s a big rommelmarkt (second hand market) on Sint Jansplein from 9am.

And two free Zumba sessions (2-3pm and 4-5pm) on the Gedempte Zuiderdokken in conjunction with Think Pink ‘s Gezondheidsdag  (Health Day) who are also holding the Race For The Cure on Sunday (see below).

It’s Dag van de Klant in various local shops and businesses in the shopping areas, so you might be able to pick up freebies and goodies. Put your postcode (2000 if you are shopping around the centre of town) into the search frield to see which shops are taking part near where you will be.

Sunday

lambermonmartreinstaf

It’s the last Lambermontmartre for 2016, starting from midday. If you haven’t made it to any of the others, I recommend it as a relaxing afternoon out. You can browse the work of local artists, listen to some music and there is always a stand to get a sandwich, piece of cake and a glass of wine. Kids are usually happy to be taken along ,as one of the stands supplies them with paint and card to make their own artworks, for a small price.

barpaniekfMeanwhile at Bar Paniek, it’s all getting very rustic with their Farmer’s Ball … from 2pm.

Krugerplein is always a great location for neighbourhood parties –Bouger Bouger starts at 10am and continues thoroughout the day until 6: food, drink, music, a fleamarket, and again kids are usually pretty happy to be taken along as there is a good-sized playground on one side of the square. Their parents might enjoy a drink at Bar Leon which is also on that side of the square and has a handy terrace for keeping an eye on the kids.

Support the runners of Race For The Cure. Registration is now over (although not needed for the Kids’ Run) so come along to support the runners.
UPDATE: Due to the popularity of this event, the deadline for registering has been extended and you can still register throughout Thursday...

The warm, mild September is predicted to continue with low chances of showers and warmest temperatures predicted for Saturday (23 degrees).

CloudknittersPic
artwork by Leo Reijnders

A reminder about the postcard art project by Leo Reijnders, which has recently featured in Het Laatste Nieuws! It is not too late to be involved in this project:

To mark its 10th birthday, CLOUDKNITTERS is organising a MAIL ART PROJECT “The Sky’s The Limit” and is inviting every artist we know to participate and make a Mail Art Work, the size of a postcard. We also should like each artist to invite all his/ her artist friends and colleagues to do the same: our aim is to make an ‘artistic footprint’ of the Cloudknitters network.

These small pieces of art will be exhibited during the CLOUDKNITTERS 10- YEAR festival that lasts from 30th September until 23rd October in the Old Bourse, Hofstraat 15, 2000 Antwerp (Belgium)

This Old Bourse is the oldest stockmarket of Antwerp for international trading. The Pagadder Tower (1533) was a watch-tower whose purpose was to spot ships so they could be compelled to pay excise duties. This happened during the Spanish occupation, and the tower was manned by officers who were considered too small to fight. Pagador means paymaster in Spanish, but here in Antwerp they still use the word ‘pagadder’ (affectionately) for a small girl or boy.

Each of the little Mail Art works will be used for a video and will be exhibited on the internet.

On the last day of the exhibition, all of the works will be sold for 20 euros each and this money will be used to fund the Cloudknitters festival.

Thus, all the works that I receive before 23rd October can be part of this project. It starts from the moment you read this …until 23 October 2016. The theme is “THE CLOUDKNITTERS”.

Please send your postcard-sized artwork to: Leo Reijnders, Bouwensstraat 9, 2140 Borgerhout  (Belgium).

Let’s make the biggest MAIL ART PROJECT ever!

Tickets are 9 euros- available now via the website -seating is limited in this lovely -but petite- venue (BATS Little Theater), so don’t delay (image courtesy of SWAAJP).

Don’t forget that next Wednesday -it being the last of the month – some Antwerp museums will be free.

Antwerpen Autovrij Activities

Today is Antwerp’s car -free day. Roads in and around the centre will be closed to cars between 10am and 6pm. This map shows the car-free zone. Instead of cars, there will be plenty of bikes, trikes, pedestrians, wheelchair users and outdoor play activities claiming the streets, as well as stands offering lots of information about environmentally-friendly transport initiatives, and activities. It’s a really good day to be in the town, particularly if you have kids and the weather is good. Additionally on Twaalfmaandenstraat (off Meir) there will be a Food Market.

Keep walking, and head to the Stadspark for the Goegekregen second hand market between 9am and 6pm on the van Eycklei side of the park.

And this week on de Coninckplein there is a rommelmarkt (and kids’ activities) just for youngsters aged 6-15. Kids can sell (max. 5 euros) or swap their items, or things they have made themselves. Bring your things, and a blanket to put them on, and register here -click on ‘inschrijven’ on the right hand side. There will be other activities available for kids to enjoy between 12 and 5 -all with a supernatural/ ghoulish theme. Perfect if you feel like an early Hallowe’en…

Sunday

In the Permeke library, which is also on de Coninckplein, there will be a showing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at 11am for 6 euros (only 4 euros if you get your ticket in advance). This is part of a series of events for children (and the young-at-heart) marking 100 years of Roald Dahl throughout September.

Sunday is Open Monumentendag (Heritage Day) throughout Flanders. This means that Heritage sites in the area will be open and a number of activities (tours, bike rides, exhibitions and readings) will be on offer. Check the Antwerp area for specific details, but -for example – it will be open-doors at the beautiful  Roma Theatre from 10am, following extensive restoration work which can now be seen by the public. It’s also a chance to see a 1950s projector cabin and check out their program for the coming season. Drinks and refreshments will be served, including free chocolate milk for kids.

Markt van Morgen (jewellery, accessories, gifts -all made by local creatives) will be on Kloosterstraat from midday.

After a disappointingly drizzly week, this weekend looks set to be largely dry (some possibility of showers on Saturday) and cloudy, with warmest temperatures (24- 26 degrees) on Sunday, which could also be sunny…. Fingers crossed!

Kids

Bibfabriek at Permeke Library is keeping kids entertained for free on every Wednesday afternoon throughout August (from 2- 4pm).

Cargo Summer Bar is also providing kids entertainment on Wednesdays at 2 (games, face-painting, workshops, dance.) Keep an eye on their Facebook page in case activities are cancelled or rescheduled due to weather.

Speel-O-Rama is on daily (Mon- Fri) at Zuiderpershuis for kids aged7-13, from 10am- 4.30pm for 2 euros per child. For the week 08/08 -12/08 the theme is Street Theater. There are other ongoing activities and workshops too.

Kids will enjoy being taken to the summer edition of Sportopia in Park Loods (Park Spoor Noord) which returns on July 20th. The winter version of this was good -my kids enjoyed it on more than one occasion, although it can get busy. It costs 6 euros per session, but is less than that if you have an A-Kaart and free to under 4s, or those with 10 points on their A-Kaart. Open 10- 6pm Wednesdays- Sundays.

Get Involved In An Interesting Art Project…

If you would like to try something creative this summer, and think that starting small would be the best way to begin, this project, which is the brainchild of Antwerp-based artist Leo Reijnders is perfect for you:

CloudknittersPic

To mark its 10th birthday, CLOUDKNITTERS is organising a MAIL ART PROJECT “Let Sky The Limit” and is inviting every artist we know to participate and make a Mail Art Work, the size of a postcard. We also should like each artist to invite all his/ her artist friends and colleagues to do the same:

Our aim is to make an ‘artistic footprint’ of the Cloudknitters network.

See the Toren here.

Please send your postcard-sized artwork to:

Leo Reijnders , Bouwensstraat 9, 2140 Borgerhout  (Belgium)

Let’s make the biggest MAIL ART PROJECT ever!

This weekend: 1st, 2nd & 3rd July

Friday

If you’ve wandered through Sint Jansplein recently you will have noticed the building of a large wooden construction. This is the work of Timecircus -the artists’ collective, resident at Permeke Library. It’s called Labrint and will be opening on Friday at 2pm.

labrintF
Labrint

Friday will be a big day if you are Red Devils fan: Belgium play Wales so here’s a reminder of places round town you might like to go share the excitement by watching the game on a big screen: Spoor OostCargo Summer BarPlein PubliekDageraadplaats and Gedempte Zuiderdokken.

Drama queens & kings, NB: BATS won’t be having their monthly opening evening this month. The next one is in September.

And the mother of all Antwerp summer bars, courtesy of Zomer van Antwerpen, is now open on Sloepenweg. Best way to get there is by bike, cycling along the river in a northerly direction -you can’t miss it. It’s a lovely spacious venue, with a reading area and plenty of sand and playground space for kids.

The Open Air Theater in Rivierenhof has now begin its summer program. You can find tickets for paying events on its website, but there are some free events too such as this one for younger audiences at 1, and a free world music concert at 8pm.

Saturday

skateparkF
The Skatepark in Stadspark

There’s an Urban BMX event in Stadspark throughout the afternoon. If you want to compete, be there at midday (at the skatepark).

Antwerp’s very own Farmers’ Market, MARTA, will be on the Kattendijkdok from 9am – 4pm. This is a regular even, on the first Saturday of each month.

And KAVKA is opening its very own summer bar- Bar Cour– described as a ‘green oasis in the heart of the city’. This is a very nice little venue (and youth centre), with a strong eco slant, and the courtyard is a real sun-trap on warm days.

kattendijkdokF
Bar Paniek & Born in Antwerp are on the Kattendijkdok

New Instagram pics from the past week include Bierpassie, Mechelsepleinfeesten, Cargo Zomerbar and a really cute zebra baby. Because who couldn’t use a cute zebra pic just now?

July 7- 10th, it’s Tall Ships. The sight of the tall ships in the harbour is always impressive. There is usually a ship that you can board and have a look around. It’s a good family day out.

Friday

antwerptower
Bar Gloed is on the 4th floor

For after-work drinks, many of the summer bars are now open including  CargoBocaderoThe Next LevelBar PaniekSmokey Joes Garage (previously Bar Josephine) Bar Gloed on the Keyserlei (Antwerp Tower) and Zomer Fabriek. A couple more will open their doors toward the end of the month.

Saturday

On the Grote Markt, MUHKA will be holding Acid Brass, presented by Jeremy Deller and the Festival Brass Band, 1.30- 3pm. In the event of bad weather this will be held on Theater Plein. It’s bass band music with a difference -I saw this once in Glasgow, many moons ago, and it was thoroughly entertaining to hear tracks like ‘What Time is Love?’ and ‘Voodoo Ray’ rendered by a full-on brass band. This is part of a MUHKA Exhibition on rave culture.

UEFA

UEFA: The Belgium -Ireland game is going to be the big match of the day. I have mentioned already some venues which are showing the games on big screens (Plein Publiek, Cargo, Dageraadplaats and Chatleroi). This one will also be showing on Groenplaats -kick-off is at 3pm. Alternatively it’s sure to be very lively in the Irish bars in town (An Sibhin, Kelly’s and The Irish Times) for this one …

Sunday

YogaDay
International Day of Yoga 2015 attracted over 1000 participants.

The International Day of Yoga  (copyright image courtesy of AWDC) in Antwerp is a wee bit further out than most events I include but I am putting it in because it is a must for those who practice yoga. It’s a big event and it is totally free. Don’t forget to register if you would like to attend. The event is suitable for those aged 12+. The host of the event (Reetu Mehta) will also be teaching ‘Mudras’ this year (hand gestures, used in conjunction with breathing techniques and chanting).

WP_20160221_003

Goegekregen fleamarket from 10am -6pm on the Kattendijkdok and Swan Market will be on Grote Markt again from midday until 6pm. Right near central station there is a second hand clothing sale on Van Leriusstraat starting at 10am.

It’s the third Sunday of the month, so there is the book and magazine fair in front of Permeke Library on De Coninckplein from 10am -4pm. Meanwhile, inside the library itself between 11-12 in the auditorium there is a read-aloud for kids aged 4-8, with a dinosaur theme.

Middleheimparkstatues
Middelheim Museum

Here is a unique type of tour of Middelheim Sculpture Museum: this tour is specifically designed for those with mild to moderate dementia (and their caregivers). It is free and you do not need to reserve. It is in Dutch. If you think you know someone who might benefit from this, do watch the film on the page, which is subtitled in English, and explains the purpose and style of the tour.

The weather is predicted to be mild/ warm, with light showers on Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks like being cloudy, but dry. (image: Pixabay)

A shout out to the Antwerp International School whose school year finishes this week. Lots of love -and safe travels -to staff and students who will be heading to family and friends around the world over summer. And a special mention to wish all the best for those students who will receive IB and IGCSE exam results soon … especially the students from IB English B 😉
