Saturday

dkbeerfToday and on Sunday there’s Wild Jo’s Market over at Boomgaardstraat 17 (near the de Koninck Brewery) where until recently the summer bar “Smokey Jo’s” could be found. It’s open from 10am until midnight and is 3 euros in, but that includes a drink. Local designers and creatives will be selling their fashion, accessories, retro and vintage goods, and art. There will also be music, food trucks and -of course -a bar.

There’s the 2016 Antwerp Harbour Run taking place at 3pm. There’s a 15km run and three 5km runs. You can see the route here and registration for the 15km remains open online until Friday, but you can also register on the day itself at the event site from midday.

And in Borgerhout there will be a procession of giants on and around the Turnhoutsebaan. Be around de Roma Theatre at 1 o’clock for a good view of the 304th edition of this unusual parade.

Sunday

autovrijf
Antwerpen Autovrij Activities

Today is Antwerp’s car -free day. Roads in and around the centre will be closed to cars between 10am and 6pm. This map shows the car-free zone. Instead of cars, there will be plenty of bikes, trikes, pedestrians, wheelchair users and outdoor play activities claiming the streets, as well as stands offering lots of information about environmentally-friendly transport initiatives, and activities. It’s a really good day to be in the town, particularly if you have kids and the weather is good. Additionally on Twaalfmaandenstraat (off Meir) there will be a Food Market.

Keep walking, and head to the Stadspark for the Goegekregen second hand market between 9am and 6pm on the van Eycklei side of the park.

The temperatures are likely to drop off from the remarkable highs we have had this week, and it could be cloudier at times, but the weather is still predicted to be warm and dry on Saturday and Sunday. There maybe some showers on Friday during the middle of the day.

This weekend: 2nd, 3rd & 4th September

Harumph …  there seems to be a lot of closing events, which compel us to acknowledge that summer is drawing to a close. But fear not! There is a lot going on to console Antwerp residents, and weekend visitors too…

And a special mention to the BATS choir who will be singing at the Tank Ceremony (at the Cromwell Tank at 9.30am on the Jan Van Rijswijcklaan, near the Expo) as the liberation weekend concludes, in commemoration of the Liberation of Antwerp and organised by The Royal British Legion.

William Shakespeare

The 23rd of April marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare‘s death. I couldn’t find a great deal going on around Antwerp except in the bookshop De Groene Waterman where there will be a reading and talk (in Dutch) analysing why Shakespeare’s themes and plays continue to endure to this day. This is free and starts at 4pm.

A special shout out to staff and students of the Antwerp International School who finish up for the winter break this Friday! Happy holidays!

As well as the main Christmas market in the old town, other smaller markets will also be happening, including ones like this one at Grand Cafe Le Roi on Kasteelpleinstraat. This will be on on both Saturday and Sunday.

Details of two Christmas church concerts can be found here.

Saturday

If you are feeling sporty, Antwerp has its own  Santa Run sponsored by the Gazet van Antwerpen. If you want to run you need to register here. Be quick -registration ends at midnight on the 11th. If you aren’t running, you can go along to Park Spoor Noord to cheer on those who are: the run starts at 5pm, and will follow a route through Meir and The Christmas market. This is how it looked last year …

After which you might feel inclined to head to the Festive Open Stage at An Sibhin on Nationalestraat for spontaneous performances of music, comedy and song.

This weekend: 21st- 22nd November 2015

rainystreetSome rainy day outings for grown-ups …. after last week’s kid-centric post. There seems to be a more mature offering this weekend, as the weather turns more wintry …

Saturday

The photography museum celebrates 50 years with a number of events and exhibitions over the entire weekend.

Also for the culturally minded a Zine Fest which is also taking place over the whole weekend as is “Veterans Day” , a symposium of events celebrating 1960s Antwerp (fashion, design, art and music). You can find the full program here.

Festive shoppers may be in luck at the handcrafted market where creatives will be selling their own home-made products. I like the Berlin bar which is nearby, if you are stopping for a drink.

… and a new bar is opening in Antwerp Saturday evening.

Sunday

toys

If, like me,  you are shopping for kids in the near future (in our home we celebrate Sinterklaas, Christmas and the birthdays of all three children during winter!) then you may want to head to a second hand toy market at De Roma Theatre.

Science Day is taking place in various locations around Antwerp on Sunday. All activities are free, but you need to register for some of them. These activities will be in Dutch, although for some activities language might not be so significant -like the exhibits and activities around Astrid Plein and Central Station.

This weekend: 24th- 25th October

Stadspark

Saturday

Film lovers might be interested in taking the opportunity to discover Filmhuis Klappei. It’s a very small film theatre, not too far from de Coninckplein On the 24th, film fans can catch three classic American noir movies for a very low price. Klappei also has a nice bar and is perfect if you want to get away from the multiplexes.

There is a new sculpture exhibition opening at Middelheim Museum. It’s really worth discovering this place which is a lovely place to visit whenever the weather is dry. There are some big names in sculpture as permanent exhibits here, and lots of space for kids to run free.

Shoppers with excess money burning a hole in their pocket might want to check out stores participating in Belmodo Fashion Days on both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday

If you have kids (or a sweet tooth) you may need to be quick if you want to book The Pancake Boat . This is a tour along the harbour, while simultaneously eating pancakes. The boat is packing up for the season, so this will be the last weekend (until next spring) that you can take a trip. It’s reasonably priced, and the serving of pancakes is friendly and efficient, so you aren’t waiting for long. The trip is about the right length, so smaller kids do not get bored

Espectro is an evening of arts and music, right in the centre of town on Sunday evening (Rooseveltplaats is where all the busses go to/ from). If you register on their site in advance you will get a free drink on arrival, and it is only 4 euros to get in.

Fleamarket at the Eco -café which is easy to find from Central Station. Cross Astridplein next to the station, turning right as you face Aquatopia and the Radisson. It’s about 10-15 minutes’ walk on your left. As well as the café, you can visit the Eco Huis, which is a resource and exhibition space devoted to eco -friendly living.

If you like knitting and want to chill out in a café with other knitters and improve your skills then The Sunday Sock Club starting at 10am will interest you. 8 euros.

For something a bit more active there is a Dance festival starting at 2pm at the Arenberg Theatre (right near Theatreplein) and costing 10 euros -various different types of dance will be featured. Price includes coffee & cake.

Thursday 29th October

OK, not strictly the weekend, but put the date in your diary ahead of time if you want to go to An Sibhin’s Quiz Night It’s my favourite Irish Bar (always friendly, unpretentious, welcoming of kids during the day, great sandwiches, soups, home-made cake) and can be found on Nationalestraat, not far from Groenplaats, and just past the fashion museum. Why is the quiz not on Hallowe’en itself? Hmmmm …..my guess is that the pub is going to be showing the Rugby World Cup Final that night. Thursday’s quiz will be in English and you need to be in a team of max. 5 people. Send a PM via the Facebook page to register.
