Buitenspeeldag!

24th April is Buitenspeeldag (play outside day) from 1pm -5pm. There are a number of areas where kids can join in with this and where outside toys and games are provided for them. Last year mine enjoyed this day in the reading garden at Permeke Library, and on de Coninckplein (left), but elsewhere in and around town there are other places too: Kielpark, Agorapark, Stuivenbergplein, Sint-Andriesplaats, Koning Albertpark and Boeienweide.

Brocantwerpen is an antiques and bric-a-brac market held on Grotemarkt over the summer months: the first one is next Wednesday (24th) from 10am -6pm.

Also on the last Wednesday of the months, these Antwerp City Museums are free.

Runners! There is still time to sign up for The Antwerp 10 miles and marathon. This event takes place on the 28th April.

Outdoor play at Permeke Library

Next Wednesday (18th April) it’s Buitenspeeldag (‘Play Outside Day’). Buitenspeeldag encourages children to play outside all afternoon (and no homework should be given!). Various activities and toys are provided in different locations: last year I took my kids to the reading garden (‘leestuin’) at the Permeke Library. You can search here for particpating venues in the Antwerp area.

If you are a runner, you can still register for the Antwerp Ten Miles which takes place on  the 22nd April. If ten miles is a bit too far for you then I can recommend The Race For The Cure which is now open for individual and team registrations. My son and I did this last year – it was a lovely event  down on the Kaaien, and a great cause.

The weather should be nice again this weekend -quite warm and dry, with top temperatures around 21 degrees. It is also predicted to be good next week (for buitenspeeldag on Wednesday).

Sunday -Easter Day
Easter Day is all about brunching. You might remember that back in March I wrote about the work of Maddilyn Goodwin and the Sunburnt Country Project  which takes place on 19th May at Singel.   WILD restaurant in the old town is hosting a fun fundraising event in the form of a brunch, at 11am- 3pm, to help establish the costs of building the concept. Guests can experience the culinary side of Australia while helping these passionate artists come together to expand the cultural offers of Antwerp. There will be Australian-inspired food, sweets, drinks, live music and a bit of trivia! Prices range from 6 euros to about 15, depending on what you have to eat/drink. You can come for a full lunch or just swing by for a drink.

If you are in the old town, swing by Steegsken 6 for a small garage sale which is well worth a visit -throughout April, on Sundays from 11 -6pm.

Easter Monday

It’s a holiday and shops are closed, but there are two markets which will be worth checking out: Goegekregen will be on Theaterplein all day, with the usual fair of vintage, retro and second-hand clothes, toys, books and household items. Meanwhile in Borgerhout on the Krugerplein, there is the Easter edition of Krugermarkt (selling second hand goods and their own handmade creations) offering activities for kids (races and an egg hunt). There is also a brunch which you can join in for 15 euros pp by registering via mail at borgernatives@gmail.com Krugerplein is a pretty square with space for kids to play, or to have a picnic.

Last chance to take kids to the pop-up indoor play above Mercado, on Groenplaats ….

This weekend: April 8th, 9th & 10th

Friday

ami
Café Ami

This weekend, why not check out Café Ami? It’s on the Katelijnevest, just off Meir, and is a friendly, unpretentious bar where there is often free music. This Friday it’s live blues & folk from Johan Corthals, at 8pm. More folk at Ami at the same time on Saturday night too.

Saturday

Recycle your clothes at the indoor Revive Market. Note: Plein Publiek is still closed; this event will take place at Nassaustraat 38, 2000 Antwerp, Belgium -that’s the Monique Stam store on Eilandje.

From 1.30 -5.30 there are sporting activities aimed at young people on Groenplaats. Jespo VZW  offers kids and young people the chance to try out various sports and activities.

The Grand Bazar still have the kids’ farm -finishing up this weekend, though. I was there last weekend and while it is nice for children to see animals, I have to say I don’t think it was a very animal-friendly initiative, and personally, I agree with many of the points raised in this open letter to Grand Bazar Shopping Centre regarding the welfare of the animals.

Sunday

rommelpsn

This weekend’s best fleamarket option is Goegekregen in Park Loods on Park Spoor Noord. It’s a good venue to have it in (airy, lots of space) and when last there I thought that there was a great mix of goods, with something for every pocket (clothes for mere eurocents, or more costly retro chic for your home) and is free entry. There is also one at Kinepolis starting at 10 -that’s 2.50 to get in though.

stadspark
Stadspark

Klein Antwerpen are organising an egg hunt in Stadspark. Come to the King Albert Statue (that’s the big one on the Rubenslei – Van Eycklei corner) at 11am.

mmewollAfter an Easter break, Madam Woll is open again for her regular knitting and crochet café from 10am -12, costing 8 euros. Mail info@madamwoll.be to register.

kloosterstraat
Kloosterstraat

Markt van Morgen is back and on Kloosterstraat this Sunday from 12-6. Markt van Morgen spotlights local creative talent (jewellers, artists, designers) as well as being a social and friendly place to hang out.

… Or how about a Tea Dance (free entry) down by the river from 6pm?

Summer season activities/ miscellaneous

A sweet-toothed friend of mine reminded me of the Pancake Boat here in Antwerp, which is deeply popular with all three of my kids. This has just started up again for the holiday season. It’s fun to do with kids and is a great activity if you have visitors with children.

Don’t forget that the summer bars will begin opening up from this point on. Cargo is already open. Bar Paniek will open later this month. Others will open when Zomer van Antwerpen begins. But maybe I am getting a bit ahead of myself here … I am very much looking forward to summer already.

Did you know that if you live in Antwerp, you could get a free climbing plant? The idea is to offer these to home-owning neighbours who would like to grow them from one side of their street (up the wall and above the street) to the other. If you and your neighbour are interested apply here. You will receive information, and assistance in choosing the right sort of plant if you don’t know that much about gardening.

And a reminder that from this year the cathedral is free to enter if you live in Antwerp.

The weather is predicted to be mainly dry, with the possibility of some light rain/ drizzle on Saturday.

Easter weekend: 25th- 28th March

Please note, this is the information I have about weekend events at the moment. If any are cancelled or rescheduled due to the recent raising of the security threat level, I will update the post as soon as I can and will Tweet additional info. Please comment here, or mention @nessascityblog in your own Tweet if you get information yourself, so that I can RT you, and edit this post. Thank you.

Tonight (Thursday) there will be a requiem mass at MAS and a chance to sign a book of condolence from 7.30pm

Silent Vigil is planned for Friday, at 6pm on Grote Markt.

In Borgerhout on Vincotteplein there will be one at 5pm.

Brussels Airport remains closed at least for today and tomorrow. For train information about the Brussels area you can check here.

Here are the weekend’s events, as usual, which as far as I presently know, are still on course to take place over the Easter weekend.

Good Friday

Assemble on Theaterplein with your bike at 6pm for the Easter edition of Critical Mass. After which you could cycle on to Park Spoor Noord where the Cargo Summer Bar is opening for 2016 from 7pm, with music, drinks and food. Unfortunately, the big-screen showing of the football match which was due to take place at Cargo have been cancelled in the light of the attacks in Brussels, as Belgium will not be playing against Portugal on Tuesday.

There’s a new bar and bookshop opening on Grote Markt. Come and check out Kobalt from 7pm.

Easter Saturday

Spoor Oost
Image: Publicity poster, Stad Antwerpen

Head to the Spoor Oost Opening Party which kicks off at 11am and promises food, drinks, kids entertainment, playground, sport, fleamarket, BBQ and graffiti art space. Park Spoor Oost is going to serve as an huge public space and events venue for the Borgerhout/ Schijnpoort area of the city. Festivities will go on all day, and on into the night with an after-party starting at 9pm in Bahnhof (event venue/ bar).

For a traditional Antwerp experience, take part in the Semini Celebrations starting at 10am on Grote Markt, with traditional music and dance.
Who is is Semini? From Wikipedia: “At the entrance to Het Steen is a bas-relief of Semini, above the archway, around 2nd century. Semini is the Scandinavian God of youth and fertility (with symbolic phallus). A historical plaque near Het Steen explains that women of the town appealed to Semini when they desired children; the god was reviled by later religious clergy. Inhabitants of Antwerp previously referred to themselves as “children of Semini”. An organization concerned with the historic preservation of Het Steen and Semini, Antwerp Komitee Semini in Ere (AKSIE), formed in 1986, holds annual celebrations at Het Steen as cultural events.”

By “reviled by later religious clergy”  what is actually meant is that the Jesuits chopped his phallus off. Prior to that, fragments of it had been supposedly chipped away by the women of Antwerp who believed they would help them conceive. Unlucky, Semini. He is a well known figure here and the people of Antwerp once referred to themselves as “Semini’s Children”.

Nonetheless, it’s still a special day to get married, if you are an Antwerp couple, and after the celebrations on Grote Markt, the procession will make its way to Sint Andriesplaats (coStA) arriving at around 1pm, for free musical performances and folk singers.

standries
Sint Andriesplaats

Not far away at the St Anna Tunnel -AKA Voetgangers (pedestrians) Tunnel- there will be a free urban dance event, The Antwerp Battle taking place just in front of the tunnel entrance, where there is a basketball court (St Jansplein). There’s a vintage/ antique market here each Sunday, but also one today.. If you have never been in the tunnel, it is really worth seeing. You can cross to Linkeroever, under the Schelde, by foot or by bike. The Antwerp Battle is one a a number of different dance events happening as part of Dans Promenade ,all of which are free.

Near Astridplein there is a free art market at the Afrikaans Cultureel Centrum, from midday.

Easter Day

If you are feeling sporty or need to run off an excess of chocolate, then head for Rivierenhof at 11am (meet at the lake in the centre of the estate) where you can join runners training for the Antwerp 10 miles & Marathon taking place this year on the 17th April.

It’s the last chance to see Le Bruit des Choses exhibition Middelheim Museum. Middelheim is free.

Easter Monday

window of an Antwerp chocolatier

Note that most shops in Antwerp will be closed on Easter Monday.

I suggest eating some chocolate.

Tip for Wednesday: On the last Wednesday of the month, the permanent collections of the following museums are FREE. It’s worth noting that this Wednesday (30th) is a school holiday and taking the kids at this time will save you quite a bit. It’s useful to know that The Red Star Line museum is often particularly busy though, so have a Plan B if that is is full of visitors taking advantage of the free entrance.

Temperatures for the Easter weekend look fairly fresh and mild, but there is a distinct chance of rain on both Good Friday and Easter Day. Saturday and Monday are likely to be dry.

The attacks in Brussels at the start of this week cast a shadow over Easter for everyone living in Belgium. Perhaps you have changed your travel plans as a result. I know we are all thinking of those who lost their lives and were injured in the explosions. Let’s stay calm and not lead lives driven by fear. Wishing you a peaceful and happy Easter. X
