This weekend in Antwerp: 20th & 21st January

Here’s the GOOGLE MAP for this weekend!

Saturday

tulips

It’s National Tulip Day –really. It marks the beginning of the tulip season, and while this might be more of a big deal for our friends in the Netherlands, it will be marked here in Antwerp too, with a tulip garden on Astridplein where you may pick one bunch of tulips for free, between 1pm -4.30pm

It’s the annual Children’s Ball at Opera Vlaanderen (Frankrijklei 3) at 11pm. Tickets are 8 euros via the link

At Het Roze Huis it’s the regular free film night. Tonight showing the 1990 Madonna movie-  Strike a Pose at 8pm.

Or head for the Little Theatre on Paardenmarkt for an evening of fun impro theatre (in English) courtesy of Swaajp at 8pm. Tickets are 9 euros (a mere 6 for students) and this week the special guest is Hila di Castro, from Israel.

Sunday

Permeke Library and Café

Two events at Permeke library today: the first is the regular “boekenplein” (second hand books, graphic novels, magazines and more) which takes place on the third Sunday of every month on de Coninckplein from 10am -4pm) and the second is a read-aloud hour for kids aged 4-8 at 11am (Dutch). Both are free. I also really like the cafe at Permeke (that’s the glassy green cube by the library entrance).

If  your finances are looking a bit on the thin side after the festive season, you will be pleased to know it’s the first Goegekregen/ SNITT second hand market (‘rommelmarkt’ in Dutch) this year -at the Park Loods from 9am -6pm. Free.

And here’s a children’s opera-based show which caught my eye. There are two performances on Sunday (at 3pm and 5pm), for kids aged 8+ and tickets cost 8 euros (via the link).

Wrap up, Antwerplings! It’s been a chilly week and not going to be a warm weekend, and alas, both Saturday and Sunday are likely to be showery.

Miscellaneous

One week to go until BATS panto …. the last remaining tickets can be purchased here.

This weekend in Antwerp: 12th, 13th & 14th January 2018

new-year-2841115_640

Greetings! Welcome to 2018 on Nessascityblog, and a very happy new year to you. This can be a bit of a quiet time of year, immediately after the conclusion of the Winter in Antwerp festivities, but I will do my best to bring you a selection of affordable local events and activities taking place in the coming weeks. Don’t forget to get in touch with information about events you enjoy or think should be included -via Twitter or email (nessascityblog@gmail.com) and do also remember that I am always looking for guestbloggers who would like to contribute their personal Antwerp story for a guest post.

And here’s the Google Map with the Antwerp locations featured in this post.

Friday

You might be more familiar with Aper’eau as a summer outdoor food & drink event, but on Friday they can be found on Theaterplein from 5pm for a New Year/ winter edition of their event, which includes drinks stands, food & snacks, and DJs.

Saturday

Stadsparktrees
Stadspark

Did you make some new year’s resolutions about keeping fit in 2018? You might like to join in with this 5 or 10 km running group at Stadspark 9am, at the Rubenslei/ van Eycklei corner, or this Boot Camp at Park Spoor Noord at 9.30am

Last chance to see China Light at Antwerp Zoo, which finishes today.

Sunday

Alfred Hitchcock

Round off the weekend with a trip to the pictures to see 1963 The Birds (Hitchcock) which is showing at Cinema Zuid at 6pm- the cinema at FOMU. See this classic movie for virtually half the price of a trip to the mainstream cinemas.

The Children’s farm at Rivierenhof is re-opening after its winter closure. Come and see the animals between 1 and 5pm (free).

The weather this weekend will be pretty chilly (around 6 degrees) but mostly dry (possibility of some drizzle on Friday). It will be mostly cloudy with the possibility of some brighter periods on Sunday.
