This weekend: 1st, 2nd & 3rd July

Friday

If you’ve wandered through Sint Jansplein recently you will have noticed the building of a large wooden construction. This is the work of Timecircus -the artists’ collective, resident at Permeke Library. It’s called Labrint and will be opening on Friday at 2pm.

Friday will be a big day if you are Red Devils fan: Belgium play Wales so here’s a reminder of places round town you might like to go share the excitement by watching the game on a big screen: Spoor OostCargo Summer BarPlein PubliekDageraadplaats and Gedempte Zuiderdokken.

Drama queens & kings, NB: BATS won’t be having their monthly opening evening this month. The next one is in September.

And the mother of all Antwerp summer bars, courtesy of Zomer van Antwerpen, is now open on Sloepenweg. Best way to get there is by bike, cycling along the river in a northerly direction -you can’t miss it. It’s a lovely spacious venue, with a reading area and plenty of sand and playground space for kids.

The Open Air Theater in Rivierenhof has now begin its summer program. You can find tickets for paying events on its website, but there are some free events too such as this one for younger audiences at 1, and a free world music concert at 8pm.

Saturday

And KAVKA is opening its very own summer bar- Bar Cour– described as a ‘green oasis in the heart of the city’. This is a very nice little venue (and youth centre), with a strong eco slant, and the courtyard is a real sun-trap on warm days.

Miscellaneous

For directions to all events mentioned in this weekend’s post, check the Google map.

New Instagram pics from the past week include Bierpassie, Mechelsepleinfeesten, Cargo Zomerbar and a really cute zebra baby. Because who couldn’t use a cute zebra pic just now?

July 7- 10th, it’s Tall Ships. The sight of the tall ships in the harbour is always impressive. There is usually a ship that you can board and have a look around. It’s a good family day out.

This weekend: June 24th, 25th & 26th

Hello! It’s going to be a bit of a brisk round-up this week as we are enjoying spending time with visitors from the UK and our summer holidays have begun. Next month also, there will be a reduced service when I am away on holiday, but I am planning to write a post which lists the most important links for the summer season.

Note that a couple of events listed here (Ramblas, Bierpassie and Barrio Latino) take place on both Saturday and Sunday.

Friday

Flying Pig at Het Steen was a cool start to the weekend a couple of weeks back. The Second Edition of Flying Pig is at Napoleonkaai (near MAS museum) and kicks off at 5.

For after-work drinks, many of the summer bars are now open including  CargoBocaderoThe Next LevelBar PaniekSmokey Joes Garage (previously Bar Josephine) Bar Gloed on the Keyserlei (Antwerp Tower) and Zomer Fabriek.

For Beer lovers, head straight to Groenplaats for the start of Bierpassieweekend at 5pm. All beers 2 euros (pay with jetons). Bierpassie continues on Saturday and Sunday.

And for cyclists, it’s a party edition of Critical Mass -assemble with your bike on Theaterplein at 6pm; the ride will conclude with drinks and music at Moorkensplein Borgerhout.

Mechelsepleinfeesten (see below) is also already underway for Friday.

Saturday

Its the Mechelsepleinfeesten this weekend from 4pm – 11pm each day, promising food trucks, music, performances and more.

A similar event takes place on Falconplein, but with an emphasis on international food and music: Ramblas starts at 10am both Saturday and Sunday with four music stages, and food and drink from a variety of different countries. And in a similar vein, but with an emphasis on dance is Barrio Latino on the Paardenmarkt

Sunday

The first Lambermontmartre was spoiled by rainy weather last month. Let’s hope it stays dry this Sunday, when it is back on Leopold de Waelplaats (that’s in front of the fine art museum – KMSKA) this Sunday from midday. As well as the chance to see and buy a variety of works by local artist, there is food and drink available, and a chance for kids to paint too.

Or there is a Vintage Market at Bocadero from midday.

If you have kids to amuse then this free performance at 3 at Ramblas on Falconplein for kids aged 3+ might be fun!

clouds-1293230_640Friday might see some showers, but Saturday and Sunday are due to be warm and dry, if not sunny, with temperatures of 21 deg. and above. (pic: Pixabay)

Check out Nessascityblog Instagram page with pictures from last weekend of Swan Market, Boekenplein, Goegekregen at Born In Antwerp and fans enjoying football at An Sibhin and on Groenplaats. And of course the blog can also be found on Twitter  and  Pinterest.

This Weekend: June 17th, 18th & 19th

Friday

antwerptower
Bar Gloed is on the 4th floor

For after-work drinks, many of the summer bars are now open including  CargoBocaderoThe Next LevelBar PaniekSmokey Joes Garage (previously Bar Josephine) Bar Gloed on the Keyserlei (Antwerp Tower) and Zomer Fabriek. A couple more will open their doors toward the end of the month.

Saturday

On the Grote Markt, MUHKA will be holding Acid Brass, presented by Jeremy Deller and the Festival Brass Band, 1.30- 3pm. In the event of bad weather this will be held on Theater Plein. It’s bass band music with a difference -I saw this once in Glasgow, many moons ago, and it was thoroughly entertaining to hear tracks like ‘What Time is Love?’ and ‘Voodoo Ray’ rendered by a full-on brass band. This is part of a MUHKA Exhibition on rave culture.

UEFA

UEFA: The Belgium -Ireland game is going to be the big match of the day. I have mentioned already some venues which are showing the games on big screens (Plein Publiek, Cargo, Dageraadplaats and Chatleroi). This one will also be showing on Groenplaats -kick-off is at 3pm. Alternatively it’s sure to be very lively in the Irish bars in town (An Sibhin, Kelly’s and The Irish Times) for this one …

Sunday

YogaDay
International Day of Yoga 2015 attracted over 1000 participants.

The International Day of Yoga  (copyright image courtesy of AWDC) in Antwerp is a wee bit further out than most events I include but I am putting it in because it is a must for those who practice yoga. It’s a big event and it is totally free. Don’t forget to register if you would like to attend. The event is suitable for those aged 12+. The host of the event (Reetu Mehta) will also be teaching ‘Mudras’ this year (hand gestures, used in conjunction with breathing techniques and chanting).

WP_20160221_003

Goegekregen fleamarket from 10am -6pm on the Kattendijkdok and Swan Market will be on Grote Markt again from midday until 6pm. Right near central station there is a second hand clothing sale on Van Leriusstraat starting at 10am.

It’s the third Sunday of the month, so there is the book and magazine fair in front of Permeke Library on De Coninckplein from 10am -4pm. Meanwhile, inside the library itself between 11-12 in the auditorium there is a read-aloud for kids aged 4-8, with a dinosaur theme.

Middleheimparkstatues
Middelheim Museum

Here is a unique type of tour of Middelheim Sculpture Museum: this tour is specifically designed for those with mild to moderate dementia (and their caregivers). It is free and you do not need to reserve. It is in Dutch. If you think you know someone who might benefit from this, do watch the film on the page, which is subtitled in English, and explains the purpose and style of the tour.

The weather is predicted to be mild/ warm, with light showers on Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks like being cloudy, but dry. (image: Pixabay)

Flower and garden enthusiasts should head to Rivierenhof for the Rose Festival from 11am. There will also be a wool demonstration/ activity at the children’s farm (image: Pixabay).

For something a bit different, why not check out this artistic performance involving a large block of ice and a chainsaw at Artelli Gallery between 3 -6pm? It’s the finissage of an exhibition by Alexandre Nicolas.

Sintannatunnel
Sint Annatunnel

Here’s a market on every Sunday (9-5pm) that you may not be aware of: it’s an antiques and bric-a-brac market on Sint Jansvliet (that’s the square by the Sint Annatunnel).

The weather is looking pretty nice, with warmish temperatures and Friday set to be dry. It will be cooler and more changeable (possible light showers) on Saturday and Sunday.
